TESTIMONY ON FDA FOOD SAFETY PROPOSAL

United Weighs In on Import Safety Requirements of Food Safety Modernization Act
During the FDA's first public meeting on the new Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA), United Fresh Senior Vice President of Public Policy Robert Guenther submitted the association's initial comments on the import safety provisions of the law.

"There are many grower-shippers and fresh-cut processors who grow primarily domestically but may also have growing operations or partnerships in other countries.

MEXICO: REPORT FROM NAYARIT

By Will Cavan
IMO

April 2, 2011

IMO sources in Mexico are reporting the following information for the Nayarit, Mexico mango season:

ATAULFO:

The 10,000 hectares of Ataulfo variety mango have been hit very hard by by the recent frosts back in February.

It appears that there was abundant inflorescence this year, and the sustained cold produced a very heavy fruit drop.

As a consequence, supply of Ataulfo variety will be very short out of Nayarit.

The Ataulfo variety is notorious for fruit drop and the cold only exacerbated the characteristic of this variety of mango.

TOMMY, KENT & KEITT:

All three varieties do not appear to be showing any effect from the frost. The projection is for a normal season.

TOMMY:

The TOMMY season from Nayarit should run from the end of May through the beginning of July.

KENT:

The KENT season from Nayarit is expected to start at the end of June.

KEITT:

The KEITT season from Nayarit is expected to begin in July.

Tommy de fines de Mayo a principios de Julio;

Kent empezando a fines de Junio

y Keiit a partir de Julio.

WHY SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY IS IMPORTANT TO THE SUPPLY CHAIN

New challenges and diverging responses Buying companies have responded to the challenges around fair labour and environmental conditions in their supply chains by developing codes of conduct and monitoring systems, either individual or collaborative.  However, the number of codes has proliferated (there now exist over 1000 different codes and implementation systems) and approaches by companies and schemes have somewhat diverged . This has led to duplication (with the multiplication of overlapping audits per supplier) and sends a confused message to suppliers and to public authorities as to what is expected in terms of fundamental labour rights and site-specific environmental practices. Adverse effect This is causing inefficiency and slowing improvement within the supply chain.  Moreover, it is in many cases hindering the application of international labour standards and hence the respect of human and workers’ rights, as buying companies and their suppliers suffer from confusion over require…

GLOBAL SOCIAL COMPLIANCE PROGRAM: AN ALTERNATIVE TO GRASP

What is the Global Social Compliance Programme (GSCP) ?

The Global Social Compliance Programme is a business-driven programme for companies whose vision is to harmonise their existing efforts in delivering a shared, global and sustainable approach for the continuous improvement of working and environmental conditions in the global supply chain.

It offers a global platform to promote knowledge exchange and best practices in order to build comparability and transparency between existing systems.
To this effect, GSCP is developing a set of reference tools and processes that describe best practices and provide a common interpretation of working and environmental requirements and their implementation.

GFSI : A FOOD SAFETY INITIATIVE THAT IS RETAILER DRIVEN

By Will Cavan
Executive Director
International mango Organization (IMO)

April 2, 2011

They say that ignorance is bliss.

Perhaps that is what the produce industry has been doing about food safety initiatives.

The more the IMO delves into the Food safety issue the more ignorant we become. The issue is extremely confusing and the average Grower / Shipper, Importer / distributor just does not have the time to back to college to earn a degree in food safety just in order to be able to understand the labyrinth of product offerings in the food safety arena.

Since the primary reason for certification is driven by Chain stores requiring it in order to do business, why not pick the standard that the retailer association has been involved with in it's creation: Global Food safety initiative (GFSI)

CIES enjoys strong links with FMI and GMA in the USA, and is a founder member of EuroCommerce. The association works in partnership with JCA – the Japan Chain Store Association – and, in the People’s Rep…

A new standard for the fruit industry that is about to change the way that G.A.P. s are viewed is the Global Food safety Initiative or GFSI.

Global Food Safety Initiative
The Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI), an independant non-profit foundation managed by The Consumer Goods Forum, was founded in 2000.

It is:
An industry-led initiative that was created following a directive from food business CEOs after several food safety scares led to a loss of consumer confidence.

U.K: FOOD STANDARDS AGENCY REVIEWS STRATEGY TO 2015

The Food Standards Agency has reviewed its strategy to 2015 and identified six main outcomes as well a renewed focus on sustainable development.
“There is limited robust data on what constitutes sustainable food but this is an important issue,” the strategy reads. “…we will work with sustainability expoerts to make progress on this new agenda and build the necessary evidence base, coherent policy responses and advice to consumers…we will also…develop more understanding of the interaction of climate change with food safety.” Lord Rooker, chair of the agency also committed to taking action on food safety and food fraud and acting transparently, relying on science, being evidence-based and acting independently. The six main outcomes behind the agency’s strategic objective of ensuring safer food for the nation are: effective regulation,  effective enforcement,  safe UK-produced food,  safe imported food,  the supply chain gives priority to consumer interests in relation to food  and  that consumer…

ANSWERS TO F.A.Q. ABOUT THE IMO

ANSWERS TO F.A.Q. ABOUT THE INTERNATIONAL MANGO ORGANIZATION (IMO)

MOTIVATION:
During the lead up to the Presidential elections in 2000, U.S. Senator and Presidential candidate, John McCain, uttered a phrase that IMO founding Executive Director, Will Cavan took as a challenge and to this day, serves as the MOTIVATION for the IMO: “To serve a cause greater than self”
That is how the IMO came into being in August 15, 2000 as a NONPROFIT (501C3) Corporation in the State of California.
In addition, the IMO is a non Governmental organization (NGO) dedicated to interfacing with the ENTIRE Global Mango Community.
ALL points of views and efforts are listened to at the International mango Organization (IMO).
Initially at its inception, the IMO effort was confused with and attacked heavily in the press by a parallel effort by Nogales, Arizona  based Fresh Produce Association of the Americas (FPAA)which eventually morphed into the USDA marketing order that created the National Mango Board (NMB)

NMB MEMBERS COMMENT ON MARKET ACCESS ISSUES

Free-trade deals mean all the more to mango marketers, who rely heavily on smooth political relations, consistency in phytosanitary regulations and a competitive drive to offer the best products in a particular market, mango marketers say.

It’s particularly important when the item on the market in the U.S. is imported from a number of countries, they say.

Los últimos desastres naturales en Japón dieron lugar a una disminución del 20% en el suministro de los productos orgánicos en especial de espárragos y productos congelados. Four experts on Japan expressed confidence in the nation’s ability to recover from recent devastation—wrought by an earthquake and resulting tsunami—in a panel discussion at the Harvard Kennedy School yesterday night. At the event, entitled “Japan in Crisis: Exploring the Consequences of a Cascading Disaster,” scholars from a number of disciplines discussed the aftermath of the disaster from their own area of expertise.

JAPON: "ITAI DOSHIN"
