A continuance referendum is scheduled for March 2010.

The purpose of the program is to increase the consumption of fresh mangos in the United States.

An assessment of ½ cent per pound is collected on fresh mangos produced in and imported into the 50 United States, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and the territories and possessions of the United States.

The assessment is paid by first handlers and importers of 500,000 or more pounds of fresh mangos annually.

First handlers pay the assessment directly to the National Mango Board (Board), and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Service collects the…

ORCHARD MANAGEMENT AVAILABLE FROM AUSTRALIA

"Next Generation" Integrated Orchard Management Software

Like many industries, the Australian fresh produce industry is in a state of rapid change.

Massive consolidation of supply is occurring with growers amalgamating into various forms of supply chain to give them a critical mass of product with which to supply large customers – either on domestic markets or overseas.

As this consolidation occurs new demands are put on the chain.

These include; - A new, higher level of production information is required.

Varieties, volumes, timing etc etc need to be listed for each orchard and then integrated across the chain. - Stronger price pressures.

For fruit, around 50% of the total cost of production is incurred in the orchard.

USDA / FAS REPORT ON CHINA MARKET

Executive Summary

In response to rising inflation and food safety concerns, more Chinese people are cutting back on
eating out and are now cooking more and more at home.

Consumers of imported food are generally expatriates and high and upper –middle income locals. They are least affected by inflation and pay great attention to food safety. Consumption of western style products continues to grow as they generally are regarded as good quality, nutritious and safe.

Some products, such as fresh fruit, frozen vegetables and nuts, have much deeper penetration, and some supermarkets and convenience stores are becoming more interested in imported products. Rapid economic growth has caused the total U.S. dollar sales value of food and beverages to rise by 26.2% to USD132 billion in 2008.

International hypermarket retailers generally have a high level of familiarity with imported brands
and products, and recognize the value of bringing new products to market. Hypermarkets frequently

In addition, they are looking for more detailed information about product recalls, with more transparency from multiple sources.
Although shoppers still primarily hold manufacturers and government entities responsible for communicating recall details -- 73 percent and 69 percent respectively -- Internet access and social media are driving consumers to advocacy groups (35 percent vs. 23 percent last year) and peers (27 percent vs. 19 percent last year) for timely recall information, according to the survey.

Executive Director
International Mango Organization (IMO)
Vista, California

April 20, 2011

A very interesting and thoughtful conversation this morning with Gilmar Mello, Head of Grower Relations for Amazon Produce, the largest importer of mango from Brazil  for the USA market..

In addition to Brazil, AMAZON is sourcing from around the western hemisphere and very well versed on what is going on in other countries.

Mr. Mello is currently in Brazil where he will be based until July prior to returning to AMAZON's base in New Jersey for the winter season.

Mr. Mello explained that Brazil is currently experiencing a very strong internal demand for fruit that makes the export scenario very complicated.

Currently, the few mangos that are available are being sold in a 6 kg. pack for the local market in Brazil. Prices after taking into account for the exchange rate are running .70usd per kilo at the farm gate! (This is a wonderful price for farmers who are able to stress their mango tre…

This positive news for the Peruvian mango growers, and hopefully we will see more work over to this variety which will allow Peru a stronger and longer presence in the European market place.

A GUIDE TO LIVING IN A RADIOACTIVE WORLD

A Layman's Intro to RadiationUpdated 3/24 -- added discussion of inhaled/ingested radionuclides at bottom.
------
I've made this page in an attempt to explain some concepts in radiation to a general audience.

I'm a Senior Reactor Operator at the Reed Research Reactor, and one of my many duties is being aware of radiation levels in the facility and adjusting my behavior appropriately.

First, here's a chart laying out the scale of various doses.

The top chart covers doses in one day, while the bottom covers doses over a whole year.

PUTTING THE IRRADIATION DEBATE INTO PERSPECTIVE AFTER JAPAN TRAGEDY

Source : http://blog.xkcd.com/2011/03/19/radiation-chart/ Radiation Chart

There’s a lot of discussion of radiation from the Fukushima plants, along with comparisons to Three Mile Island and Chernobyl.

Radiation levels are often described as “<X> times the normal level” or “<Y>% over the legal limit,” which can be pretty confusing.

Ellen, a friend of mine who’s a student at Reed and Senior Reactor Operator at the Reed Research Reactor, has been spending the last few days answering questions about radiation dosage virtually nonstop (I’ve actually seen her interrupt them with “brb, reactor”).

She suggested a chart might help put different amounts of radiation into perspective, and so with her help, I put one together.

She also made one of her own; it has fewer colors, but contains more information about what radiation exposure consists of and how it affects the body.

I’m not an expert in radiation and I’m sure I’ve got a lot of mistakes in here, but there’s so much wild mis…
