FOCUS ON RETAIL: WAITROSE (NEXT PHASE) UNITED KINGDOM

Waitrose has unveiled the next phase of its online assault in the capital, with plans for a 100,000 sq ft dark store in Acton.
The new site is more than a third larger than the chain’s biggest physical store, which covers just 70,000 sq ft.
“This is a significant step in the development of our multi-channel offer, and will play an important role in the continued growth of our e-commerce sales over the next decade,” said Waitrose managing director Mark Price.
“The density of population and rapid growth of online shopping in London calls for an additional approach to e-commerce to ensure that we offer our customers the same standards of service that they've come to expect from our branches.”

TANZANIA CONFERENCE: AFRICAN AGRICULTURE MUST REFORM

By Samuel Kamndaya,The Citizen Reporter

Dar es Salaam.

If you ask a banker to choose between giving loans to an African farmer and a trader, he/she will go for the latter, bankers say.

They note that in its current status, Africa’s agriculture remains one of the riskiest sectors for a financial institution to put money in.

Despite employing over 60 per cent of Africa’s population and with a number of trickle down effects to the continent’s economy, agriculture in Africa still needs lots of reforms for financial institutions to start giving out loans to the sector, the chief executive officer of Equity Bank (Kenya) Limited, Dr James Mwangi, has said.

Addressing the 9th Africa Investment Forum in Dar es Salaam yesterday, he declared: “If we look at it critically, we should be able to understand that most farmers are undertake farming as an occupation and not as a business.”

The forum, which ended yesterday, was organized by the Commonwealth Business Council (CBC) in cooperation with the Eas…
