Asda scores a first with Pakistani mangoes deal

Richard Ford, The Grocer

Asda is to become the first major retailer to offer highly coveted Pakistani mangoes to shoppers.

In a major coup for its direct sourcing arm, IPL, the retailer will be selling the mangoes in 20 to 30 of its best-performing ethnic stores. The mangoes differ from the majority of those on sale in the UK in having a perfume-like bouquet and a superior eating quality.

Although some Pakistani mangoes are available in the UK, to date sales have been restricted to Asian cash & carry stores. If sales go well at Asda, it would look to roll them out to further stores this year, said a spokeswoman.

The retailer had previously been unable to sell any Pakistani fruit or vegetables because it could not ensure they were grown in line with its fresh produce specifications, which cover pesticide regulations and ethical practices.

"Asda and IPL have worked together with Minor, Weir & Willi…

Tycoon Says North Dakota Oil Field Will Yield 24 Billion Barrels, Among World’s Biggest

Billionaire  Harold Hamm  is convinced thereʼs 24 billion barrels of oil to be coaxed from the Bakken field of North Dakota and Montana. No one has more acres there than he does.

The last time we profiled Harold Hamm, the billionaire founder of Continental Resources, it was early 2009 and oil prices had slumped to $40 a barrel. This was bad news for Hammʼs big push into the Bakken oil play of North Dakota and Montana, where tight rocks and tricky drilling necessitate $50 crude to break even.

With oil back at $100, Hamm is sitting pretty with the biggest holding in the Bakken and set to invest $1 billion there this year in his quest to prove that it is not just one of the biggest oil fields in the United States, but in the whole world. “Out of all the oil plays in the U.S., thereʼs …

Living antibiotic effective against Salmonella

June 27, 2011

Scientists have tested a predatory bacterium – Bdellovibrio – against Salmonella in the guts of live chickens. They found that it significantly reduced the numbers of Salmonella bacteria and, importantly, showed that Bdellovibrio are safe when ingested.

The research was funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, carried out by Professor Liz Sockett's team at The University of Nottingham, with Dr Robert Atterbury and Professor Paul Barrow at the University of Nottingham Vet School; and published in the journal Applied and Environmental Microbiology.

Researcher Dr Laura Hobley said "Bdellovibrio has the potential to be used as a living antibiotic against some major human and animal pathogens, such as E. coliand other so-called Gram-negative bacteria."

FUTURE OF SHIPPING LINES QUESTIONED AT CONFERENCE IN NEW YORK CITY....

Concerns expressed about liner profitability

While container shipping has outperformed other industry segments in the past couple of years, concerns of another downturn were expressed Wednesday at a panel discussion at the Marine Money Week 2011 conference in New York.

"While folks are forecasting reasonable EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) levels, it is questionable whether all the liners will generate a positive net income," said Loli Wu, managing director for Bank of America Merrill Lynch.

Following a strong performance in 2010, Wu noted companies have raised significant amounts of money, both through debt and equity offerings, repositioning them for growth, and that this has given the sector a lot of confidence, and asset values have risen. But he said freight rates in Asia have come under pressure and the order book for new ships have been building. While the stocks of bo…
