Latin America Could Become Narco Region, Vargas Llosa Says

GUADALAJARA, Mexico – Drug-related violence is “a continent-wide phenomenon” and drug trafficking “is a Hydra, which is everywhere” and, if the threat is not confronted, could wind up making Latin America “into a type of narco-continent,” Nobel laureate Mario Vargas Llosa said in an interview with Efe during the 25th Guadalajara International Book Fair, or FIL, in western Mexico.


“I think the time has come to think about a different solution, and instead of repression” countries must devote resources to “the prevention and decriminalization of drugs,” the Peruvian author said.


This is the fourth time that Vargas Llosa has participated in this city’s book fair, the most important in the Hispanic world and the success of which is due to the fact that organizers have found out how to combine “the commercial, industrial aspect with the literary and intellectual aspect very well.”

China’s import volume of mangoes grew more than 750% from 2005 to 2009; however, the import value has only barely doubled. 




This discrepancy can be attributed to the larger volume purchased from Myanmar, which sells fruit at much lower prices and the decreasing price of mangoes in general. 


However, mangoes are perishable and most importers incline toward mangoes from nearby countries, such as  Thailand and the Philippines.




An importer who works in Ningbo Free Trade Zone Ganglong Fruit Co., said there are 38 varieties of mango in China, and the most popular varieties of mango (Okrung and Chok Anan) are usually imported from Thailand. 




The Okrung variety (Yao mango, egg mango or small mango) is a fruit that weighs about 50g, with green-yellow colour skin and light yellow coloured flesh. 


It is soft, juicy, very sweet with low acidity and usually bought for personal consumption.
