WHEN Eduardo’s father came back to Guatemala after a spell in the United States, the tattoos up his arms gave away his roots in the mara (gang). Before long a rival gang had planted a knife in his back; when that failed to kill him they returned to finish him off in the street near his home. Eduardo (not his real name) was only eight at the time. But to avenge his father he joined his gang as a sicario (hitman), and killed his father’s murderer. Eduardo is now trying to find out whether life can offer any of the happiness he says he has never known. Since January he has been studying computing with La Ceiba, an NGO. As for that murder: “I enjoyed it,” he says blankly.

The bullet scar on Eduardo’s chest and the beaten right arm hanging limply by his side…

Remember when I posted about The World's Most Expensive Mango

So, after arriving back home in Victoria/Vancouver, imagine the shock on my face when I spotted mangoes being sold here but for a fraction of the price. Let's do a refresher first of all.

Here, we have the mango from South Korea for approximately $34US:

But...it gets better. Later that week I was inside the produce market at the Richmond Public Market and what did I see on sale? You guessed it, Mexican m…

Cold-weather garden enthusiasts have a new reason to celebrate.

Researchers at The University of Alabama and Miami University of Ohio have introduced an innovative, all-natural foliar spray that protects plants, both externally and systemically, by enhancing their natural "anti-freeze" properties.

According to the scientists, using the new product is like moving the planting location 200 miles south-the equivalent of about one-half of a USDA hardiness zone.

A report published in HortTechnology premiered the novel topical spray developed to increase resistance to both cold damage and cold mortality in plant foliage, flowers, and fruits.

According to David Francko, Dean of the Graduate School and Professor of Biology at the University of Alabama, the patent-pending formula has been commercialized under the trade name FreezePruf.

Esteemed Mr.Cavan;

Celebrations opened with a Policy Talk on "Forests 2030: The future of forests in Europe and North America" where key findings of three major reports were presented, these being the State of Europe's Forests 2011 report, the European Forest Sector Outlook Study (2010-2030) and the North American Forest Sector Outlook Study (2006-2030).

What will European and North American forests look like in 2030? Will they store carbon, preserve biodiversity or help countries meet renewable energy commitments? Are trade-offs…
