"Andersen has, unwittingly, had a leak in his heart valve, caused by either an infection or a weakness," the group said in a statement.

"During a vacation in Switzerland his condition deteriorated acutely and therefore, he has undergone surgery which comprised replacement of a cardiac valve," the group said.

Andersen is expected to return to work in one month and doctors said he would recover fully, the group said in the statement.

SHAKEN BUT NOT STIRRED: JAPAN STARTS YEAR OFF WITH STRONG EARTHQUAKE ...

Magnitude 7.0 quake hits Japan

TOKYO (AP) – A 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck under the sea south of Japan on Sunday, shaking buildings in the capital but causing no apparent damage or tsunami.

The quake struck near the uninhabited island of Torishima in the Pacific Ocean, about 370 miles south of Tokyo, and its epicenter was about 230 miles below the sea, the Meterological Agency said. It did not generate a tsunami.

Buildings in the Tokyo area shook, but no damage or injuries were reported. Express trains in northern and central Japan were suspended temporarily for safety checks but later resumed.

No abnormalities were reported at power plants, including the crippled nuclear power plant in northeast Japan hit by the March earthquake and tsunami, public broadcaster NHK reported.

A massive earthquake and tsunami March 11 left nearly 20,000 people dead or missing. Japan, which lies along the Pacific "Ring of Fire," is one of the world's most seismically active countries.

2012: THE YEAR OF TASTING MANGOES...AS INDIA & PAKISTAN COMPETE FOR THE USA MARKET ....

Indian mangoes losing American market to Pakistan

By Yogima Seth Sharma

Jan 01 2012 , New Delhi

Indian mango exporters are losing ground to their Pakistani counterparts in the US market.

The exports of this exotic fruit from India, which started in 2007 in bargain of the access to the US Harley Davidson bikes to Indian market, is seeing a continuous decline over past three years.

Exchange rate disadvantage Indian exporters face in competition with their Pakistani peers; high freight charges and lack of irradiation facilities in India are at blame.

Data available with the agricultural and processed food product export development authority (Apeda) shows export of mangoes from India to US declined by 13.4 per cent in 2009-10 at 175.40 tonnes from 202.64 tonnes in 2008-09.

In 2010-11, export saw a steeper decline of 22.1 per cent at 136.70 tonnes. This has fallen well short of Apeda’s expectations as the US is a large market and is yet to be fully tapped for mangoes.
