FORMER SAMGA CHAIRMAN OUT TO PROMOTE HIS "PRINCESS" ...

New SA mango extends global harvesting window

January 16th, 2012

The elusive quest for the perfect mango is a difficult one, but South African grower Richard Elphick believes he has come very close to hitting the jackpot. He spoke to www.freshfruitportal.com about the long road to achieving the Princess mango, which is a late harvesting hybrid cultivar developed from the Haden and Keitt varieties.

Finding and developing the perfect mango takes hard graft, inspiration and a dash of good luck, as Elphick can testify.

It took 15 years to develop, test and patent the Princess mango, which farmers are commercially trialing as far a field as Australia, Peru and Puerto Rico with semi-commercial plantings in Egypt and Brazil.

Elphick’s 185 hectare farm in North Eastern Lowveld borders the Kruger National Park and dates back to 1902, making it the oldest farm in the area.

Export market is "very, very bad," says Hong Kong executive

More Asian air cargo carriers will remove capacity this week year as export traffic remains week, said industry executives.

The current air cargo export market out of Asia was “very, very bad,” said Paul Tsui, chairman of the Hong Kong Association of Freight Forwarding and Logistics.

He pointed to a 10 percent year-over-year decrease of export traffic at Hong Kong International Airport in the first 11 months of last year. Total traffic was down 5.6 percent in the same period.

“Most of this is down to the EU debt crisis but the U.S economy is also not very stable and Japan has not fully recovered from its earthquake [and subsequent tsunami in March]. Overall the market is just really bad.”

Carriers have reacted by pulling back or ending service entirely.

LUFTHANSA JOINT VENTURE SHUTS DOWN CHINA AIR CARGO ROUTE ...

Jade Cargo Temporarily Suspends Service

Joint venture between Lufthansa Cargo, Shenzhen Airlines cites weak demand

Jade Cargo International, a joint venture between Lufthansa Cargo and Shenzhen Airlines, is temporarily grounding its fleet of six 747-400s because of weak demand.

In a statement about the service suspension posted on the carrier’s Web site last week, the Shenzhen-based company did not disclose a reinstatement date. Asia air freight traffic, particularly shipments to and from Europe, has plummeted in recent months, sharply outpacing carriers’ removal of capacity.

Jade Cargo’s suspension of service will "also provide the shareholders with an opportunity to coordinate with stakeholders to continue with the restructuring of the company’s financial structure,” the company wrote on its Web site.

Lufthansa Cargo, which owns 25 percent of the carrier, said last month it was rev…

X-RAID: THE TEAM THAT DOMINATED THE DAKAR RALLY 2012 ...

A-Dakar Rally: "Dakar Dominator" - X-raid with 5 Mini and 3 BMW in Lima.

10th Dakar win for Stephane Peterhansel: Dakar record winner Peterhansel switched to Team x-raid following the 2009 Dakar. Up to that point in time, "Mr. Dakar" had celebrated 6 motorbike wins (1991, 1992, 1993, 1995, 1997, 1998) and three on four wheels (2004, 2005, 2007), in the legendary event.

Now, by his first win in South America, he added triumph No 10 - by delivering in his well-know style. Peterhansel celebrated three special stage wins in this year’s Dakar and convinced - as usual - by consistency and a matured style of driving. Thanks to this approach, he avoided getting involved in any major problems and on day three, he took the lead for the second time to defend it until the rally was over.

But the success story didn’t end with Peterhansel’s win, as all the five X-raid Mini entered by the team made it to the top 10. Nani Roma (ESP) ad Michel Périn (FRA) impressed by celebrating th…

443 VEHICLES STARTED AND 249 VEHICLES FINISHED THE 2012 DAKAR RALLY ....

While the last special (STAGE 14) was won by Norway's Pål Anders Ullevålseter (motorcycles) and Robby Gordon (cars), France's Cyril Despres and Stéphane Peterhansel took their fourth and tenth Dakars respectively, all categories included.

The champions were applauded on the podium on Lima's Plaza de Armas by a huge crowd which came to acclaim both the competitors and the arrival of the greatest rally raid in the world to Lima's capital. All in all, 97 motorcycles, 12 quads, 78 cars and 60 trucks made it to the finishing line of the 33rd Dakar, i.e., 249 of the 443 vehicles which started the rally in Mar del Plata.

Advantage Despres... The demonstration was decided at all levels. After covering 8,300 kilometres on roads, courses and dunes since the start in Mar del Plata, the gap between Marc Coma and Cyril Despres is 53'20". The Frenchman has won his fourth title in Lima... One more than his great rival in the elite of this sport! Once again, the extremely clos…

A CRY FOR CLARITY FOR PAKISTAN SOIL FERTILITY ...

Farming in Pakistan......have money in pocket no problem...all necessary things can be obtained...........but farming in general is bit tricky & more complicated.....majority don't have money to obtained necessary things to do farming.....one should be very dynamic & innovative to sustain it ....... unfortunately many farmers have given up and want to be as it is.....and many are still treads on traditional routes (good or bed).....much organized & corporate farming in Pakistan is almost non-existent......due to corruption in government machinery & functions......the output of R&D and services of extension are not available at farmers door....besides, jobs are rarely created in agriculture and if are available goes to apple of the eyes...and again due to corruption it keep hatching private companies, there are more than 500 generic companies which supplies seeds, fertilizers & pesticides .....those competent agri.graduates are bound to work for them and bec…

PHILIPPINES TO FOCUS ON GI (GEOGRAPHIC IDENTIFICATION) FOR MANGO BRANDING .....

‘Branding’ of homegrown products urged

THE Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) is pushing for the passage of a law that would provide the legal framework for "branding" local homegrown products not only for national pride but for economic development as well.

Ricardo Blancaflor, director-general of IPOPHL, said this year the agency would revive the campaign on how manufacturers of homegrown or indigenous products can tap a form of intellectual property branding to protect their IP rights.

Blancaflor is referring to geographical indications (GI), a tool used for many years by countries like France in staking a claim for the name "champagne" for wines made in that country; or bordeaux for wines made in the Bordeaux region in France.

GI is a form of intellectual property that indicates the specific geographical location where a unique product is made and giving its producers the exclusive right to brand the product using the name of the place.

10 DAKAR RALLY TITLES !!!...VICTORIES ON BOTH SIDES OF THE ATLANTIC .....

Winning on both sides of the Atlantic is amazing and so is winning in TWO categories....Bikes & Cars...WOW!!!!

A very Special victory to STEPHANE PETERHANSEL....

It's incredible

When you think of how hard it is to win a Dakar, it's incredible that I've been able to win ten of them.

It's been a long time, I've been waiting for five years to win again!

To take the victory in South America is a huge relief, it ranks among my best triumphs.

Moreover, the race was very close during the first week and there was always a lot of pressure.

Winning the rally for Team X-Raid makes it even more special, since Sven Quandt has been waiting for years for this to happen.

I don't know what I could do to go one better!

Beating this record is going to be difficult... for the others!

This race is stressful, exciting and fascinating, and it's also very rewarding at the end. Now I'm going to party with the entire team and then we'll see.

My finest victory will always be…

MALAWI VILLAGERS FORCED TO SURVIVE ON MANGOES ...

Chiradzulu villagers survive on mangoes

SUNDAY, 15 JANUARY 2012 13:27

CHARLES MPAKA

Group Village Headwoman Msomela of Chiradzulu has sounded an SOS about the hunger situation is her area saying if her subjects get no assistance now, the consequences will be "disastrous".

Msomela told The Sunday Times that people in her area are currently relying on mangoes which may run out in two or three weeks' time.

"Our area is a rain shadow area and we often do not harvest much. Now this year, our situation is worsened by the fact that the crop is failing. In the past years, by this time of the year, we would be counting on getting some fresh maize from our field in a few weeks. But not this year, the crop has failed and we are surely heading for a disaster," she said at her home.

A visit by The Sunday Times to the area behind Maravi Hill on the border with Thyolo found the crop in most of the fields wilted.

In some of the fields, the maize has flowered at a stunted age and in …
