EASTERN AUSTRALIA "HAMMERED" BY RAINS ....

Towns cut off in eastern Australia flooding

The town of Moree in New South Wales "looks like an inland sea" from the air

Severe flooding is threatening parts of New South Wales and Queensland in eastern Australia, with towns cut off and thousands of residents evacuated.

More than 10,000 people in communities affected by the floods have been left stranded, authorities said on Friday.

A military helicopter was sent to the northern New South Wales town of Moree with bedding and supplies.

"From the air it looks like an inland sea," said New South Wales Premier Barry O'Farrell.

Moree is reportedly facing its worst flooding in more than 35 years, with more than 2,000 people ordered to evacuate homes and buildings.

Water levels at the Mehi River there had peaked and flooding was expected to continue for several days, emergency officials said.

"As you fly over the centre of the town there are streets that look like canals that have more relevance to Venice than north-west…

SANTIAGO – Chilean Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alfredo Moreno Charme, has denied allegations of espionage against a Chilean citizen.

The accused, Luis Gutierrez Seraina, was arrested on January 30th after he was found sketching in a restricted area near Los Patos military base in Peru.

Minister Moreno stated that the Seraina “does not belong to any of the branches of the Armed Forces, nor any institution serving the state of Chile.” Seraina’s family has commented, saying that he is an innocent traveler who has, for the past two years, dedicated his life to crossing South America by bicycle.

The accused is a talented artist who has contributed to Valparaiso’s public artwork for many years, with donations as his only source of income.

“Since he finished school he’s always like to draw,” Sera…

Indian Agriculture Research Institute developes mango hybrids, promise 3-4 times higher yield

Indian Agriculture Research Institute has developed four hybrid mango varieties which promise a yield three-four times higher than the existing varieties. This is likely to scale up mango production in the next 10 years without any additional input cost. The varieties named Pusa Pratibha, Pusa Peetamber, Pusa Shreshth and Pusa Lalima possess traits of popular varieties like Dussehari and Neelam.

India is the world's largest producer of mango at 15 million tonne. It exports around 60,000 tonne to the UAE, UK, US and Bangladesh earning $35 million.

The four hybrids are a result of 15 years of research by Dr A K Singh who heads the division of fruits and horticulture technology, Indian Agricultural Research Institute. "These varieties are expected to yield 20 tonne per hectare as against the average yield of 7 tonne …

PLENTY OF FRUIT "LEFT IN THE TANK" IN PERU ...

IMO sources are reporting plenty of fruit that has not yet matured and will be ready for harvest in the upcoming weeks, radically affecting previous crop forecasts made by APEM (The Peruvian Mango Exporter's Association).

Peru Season Overview:

Mango trees depending upon the season can flower between three and as many as five times.

This determines how many times the tree will  be harvested.

Normally the first floration results in 10-12% of the tree's yield.

The second floration results in 40-50% of the tree's yield and the remaining florations will determine the balance of the tree's yield.

In very general terms, once floration begins, 150 days later fruit is ready for harvest.

The three mango regions in Peru are broken down into the following order:

This region had its first floration in June/July of 2011. A …

WOOLWORTHS (AUSTRALIA) SHINES THE LIGHT ON PREMIER MANGO SUPPLIER

We're proud to work with Barry and his team at Arnhem Mangoes, who supply delicious mangoes to Woolworths.

"Nothing beats the tropical taste of a mango, it’s the King of fruit" says Barry Albrecht, director of Arnhem Mangoes near Darwin, who have been supplying Woolworths with Kensington Pride mangoes for several years. “We give Woolworths the very best of our crop because they are very selective about the quality of their fruit,” says Barry.

“In fact, we have a Woolworths staff member on the ground here to ensure the quality is second to none.”

On average, Arnhem Mangoes supply around 60,000 to 70,000 trays of mangoes to Woolworths around the country. “It’s a huge amount of work, but it’s worth it when you see how a mango can light up someone’s eyes when they bite into the beautiful flesh!” Barry says. “When people see Kensington Pride sitting on the shelf, it’s like flies around a honey pot because their sweet aroma is incredible.”

Choosing a good mango is easy, says Barr…

GOOGLE EARTH EXPLORES THE OCEAN FLOOR ...

A clearer view of the seafloor in Google Earth Thursday, February 2, 2012 at 12:00 PM
More than two-thirds of Earth is covered by oceans. If you drained all of that water away, you'd see huge basins that have never been explored, an undiscovered planet in our own backyard.

Today is the three year anniversary of an explorable ocean seafloor in Google Earth. We just released a major update to our global underwater terrain dataset, called bathymetry, from theScripps Institution of Oceanography, in partnership with NOAA, the US Navy, NGA, and GEBCO(with major contributions from JAMSTECIFREMER and IBCAO).

The update covers ocean topography from all over the globe and reveals our most accurate view of the seafloor to date. This new detail comes from spacecraft measurements of bumps and dips in the ocean surface as well as shipboard soundings from surveys carried out by over 40 countries. With this update to ocean terrain data in Google Earth, 15 percent of the seafloor is now available a…

February 2, 2012, 10:44pm

MANILA, Philippines — Ernest Villareal and Antonino Ilagan took the top spot at the leaderboard with a combined 86 points as all 375 teams completed their first rounds Wednesday in the 28th edition of the Mango Tee member-guest golf tournament of the Alabang Country Club inside the Ayala-Alabang Village.

Villareal, a 15-handicapper, carded 41 points while Ilagan, an 18-handicapper, fired 45 to show up the big field in one of the country’s most popular member-guest events backed by Smart Communications, Pilipinas Shell Petroleum, Inc., Pancake House and Yellow Cab as presentors.

They were six points ahead of the next pair in the jampacked standings, Raffy Mapua and Renato Mercado who tallied 39-41 for 80 points.

Paul Salvador and ex-pro Vince Lauron, meanwhile, will try to protect a slim one-point lead in the low gross race when the field returns to the hazard-laden course for their final rounds from Thursday to Saturday.

Ukraine cold snap kills 63: ministry

KIEV, Feb 2, 2012 (AFP) - Sixty-three people have died over the last week as Ukraine battles a spell of abnormally cold weather that has seen temperatures plunging to minus 33 degrees Celsius, emergencies ministry said Thursday. It said that eight people died in hospitals, 41 on the streets and 14 in their homes, raising a previous toll of 43. The ministry said that the presumed cause of death was hypothermia.

A cold snap that has killed dozens of people across Europe is testing Greece's whittled-down welfare services, which have been grappling deep cuts amid the nation's ongoing fiscal crisis.

In Athens, authorities have opened emergency shelters, including at the Olympic sports complex, to help warm the city's burgeoning ranks of poor and homeless people.
