Mexico Govt Counts 6 Kidnappings a Day in Last Half of 2011Written by Jake Harper

The Mexican government reported an average of six kidnappings a day in the second half of 2011, up more than 23 percent compared to the same period in 2010.

As Excelsior reports, from July to December Mexico registered 1,239 reported kidnappings, though the rate dropped ten percent in the last three months, according to officials. While five states were able to reduce the number of kidnappings, there were nine states in which abductions increased.

Of the 32 states, only 18 have met the objective of creating specialized units to combat kidnapping, according to the article.
InSight Crime Analysis

The official kidnapping figures are contested by NGO the Council for Law and Human Rights (CLDH), which claims Mexico experienced 49 daily abductions in 2011.

This was an increase of 32 percent compared to last year, according to the NGO's count. Neither the government nor the CLDH fi…

MANGO LEAF INSPIRES A LIGHTING SYSTEM IN INDIA ...

How the humble mango leaf could change streetlights forever

Looking to nature to inspire new thinking is probably not something we do enough, though nature definitely informs designs that will help us live more sustainably. Like these redesigned streetlights: they take cues from what we see in nature the environment, not as a problem to be conquered but rather something to be utilized.

That's exactly the thinking behind the new street light concept for India that looks to the mango leaf for inspiration. The aptly named "Mango" streetlight is an LED lamp conceptthat uses both rain and sunlight to generate power.

India's environment fluctuates from monsoonal downpours and baking sunshine, so when designer Adam Mikloski considered a solution he choose one that could utilize both environments. The shape of the top part of the leaf is flat enough to install solar cells, and the tapered shape of the rest of the design collects rainwater — both of which help power the lamps.
