The government of President Hugo Chávez announced on Friday an agreement with Cuba to create a factory here to produce Coppelia ice cream, a brand famous in Cuba for its tropical flavors, including mango, pineapple and guava.

For years Venezuela has been propping up the weak Cuban economy by sending oil. In return, Cuba sends Venezuela other goods, services and manpower, including thousands of doctors. It has also sent military advisers, whose presence has at times caused friction and resentment within the Venezuelan military.

REUTERS - PepsiCo Inc Chief Executive Indra Nooyi had total compensation worth $17.1 million last year, up 6 percent from 2010, even as the food and drink company failed to meet its key internal performance targets.

The increase is largely due to a 23 percent jump in Nooyi's base salary - her first raise in five years as CEO - and a gain in the value of her retirement benefits.

Nooyi, 56, has come under pressure from Wall Street for allowing PepsiCo's North American soft drink business to languish while she focused on healthier products.

Nooyi got a base salary of $1.6 million in 2011, up from $1.3 million before. The new salary is more in line with that of her peer group, PepsiCo said in its annual proxy statement, filed on Friday.

The change in Nooyi's pension value and deferred compensation was $3 million in 2011, up from $2…

Increase in USA Customs & Border Patrol x-ray holds on fresh produce ....

Hello,

As you are aware, there has been an increase in CBP x-ray (NII) holds for your arrivals.
We have noticed this increase across the board for all of our refrigerated produce arrivals from all countries and for all types of produce.

We believe that part of the reason is the recent discovery of drugs being "piggy backed" between the walls of a reefer container.

We believe that this publicity along with other intelligence that CBP receives has increased the score for CBP NII targeting of reefer containers.

CBP targeting is designated by the Anti-Terrorism Contraband Enforcement Team (A-CET); and their operations are not pubic and are beyond our control.

We would suggest that importers who are validated participants of the Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (C-TPAT) program feel that their NII holds are excessive, contact their CBP Supply…
