The Hawaii (as in Big Island) Chapter of the Locavore movement ...

A locavore is a person interested in eating food that is locally produced, not moved long distances to market. The locavore movement in the United States and elsewhere was spawned as interest in sustainability and eco-consciousness became more prevalent.[1]

The President of Pakistan, Asif Ali Zardari, is due to travel to India in the first visit there by a Pakistani head of state for seven years.

Mr Zardari will meet Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, before travelling to an important Muslim shrine in Rajasthan.

Officials say the trip is a private visit, but there is hope it could boost economic ties between the two nations.

However correspondents say little progress is expected on other issues.

Officials say Mr Zardari is coming for private religious reasons - to visit the shrine of Sufi saint Moinudin Chishti in Ajmer, 350 kilometres (220 miles) southwest of Delhi.

TRAVEL
Where Are the World’s Rudest Countries?

By KATE SPRINGER | @katespringer | April 7, 2012

Ever travel to another country only to feel unwelcome, uncivilized or constantly in the way?

You’re not alone.

Travel website Skyscanner.com released a ranking of countries based on rudeness, and apparently, tourists can hold a grudge.

According to the International Business Times, the survey generated more than 1,200 user responses and revealed some telling results.

The top four rudest places for travelers were France, Russia, the U.K. and Germany.

Given its reputation for being a little snobby, it’s not so unpredictable that France took first place with nearly one-fifth of votes.

“This seems to be a fairly common stereotype, albeit not one which is necessarily true,”Sam Baldwin, Skyscanner’s travel editor, told the IBT. Plus, there’s a longtime rivalry between Anglophiles and Francophiles, so that could have played a part.

AHMEDABAD: Not just those staying in Ahmedabad, but also people from Vadodara, Surat and Rajkot along with those from Jaipur and Udaipur will be able to relish mangoes without fear of harmful chemicals in them.

The state government is taking measures to ensure that traders sell carbide-free mangoes. They will be providing ethylene gas chambers to the fruit traders at subsidized rates.

"The experiment to produce carbide-free mangoes was carried out in Ahmedabad. We found it to be very successful and around 200 tonnes of such mangos were sold," said Kanubhai Bhalala, the minister of state for agriculture.

Bhalala said, "We opened such centres even in Delhi. Now we are planning to have this kind of yards in Udaipur, Jaipur, Vadodara, Surat and Rajkot."

The idea is to do away with carbide, a carcinogenic agent, which is used to ripen mangoes. Bhalala said that a meeting for the same was con…

Alleviating Poverty

Around the world, 1.4 billion people -- many of whom depend on agriculture for their survival -- live on less than $1.25 a day. Left with few options, they resort to clearing land for subsistence agriculture, cutting down trees for firewood and selling illegal timber on the black market, often at prices far below the wood's real value. The small income they derive from these destructive activities is rarely enough to lift them out of poverty and only serves to perpetuate the problem.
What We’re Doing

At the Rainforest Alliance, we believe that you cannot tell an impoverished family or community to put down the axe without providing an alternative. Through certification, we work with farmers and forest managers to provide them with the tools and know-how to manage their natural resources; those that meet rigorous environmental, social and economic standards can use the Rainforest Alliance Certified™ seal to …

Delta Flight to Port-au-Prince Raises Haiti’s Hopes for Business ....

Phil Bolton
Atlanta - 04.07.12

Delta's inaugural flight to Port-au-Prince, Haiti, left Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport at 11:15 a.m., Saturday, April 7.

Delta Air Lines Inc.’s inaugural, weekly flight from Atlanta to Port-au-Prince, Haiti, left at 11:15 a.m. on Saturday, April 7, following a rousing sendoff by representatives of the city’s business, civic, diplomatic and Haitian communities.

Gandy Thomas, Haiti’s consul general for the Southeast who is based in Atlanta, requested a moment of silence in remembrance of those who lost their lives in the magnitude 7.0 earthquake in 2010 that devastated the country, and then called on businesses to look for investment opportunities there.

In an interview with GlobalAtlanta, he was optimistic about the prospects for the flight. Cutting travel time from Atlanta to Port-au-Prince, Haiti’s capital, by a day because there would no longer be the necessity of stopovers in either New York or Miami, he said his homeland “was so near…

APNewsBreak: Mali's coup leader to return power ...

By RUKMINI CALLIMACHI, Associated Press – 22 hours ago

BAMAKO, Mali (AP) — Under intense pressure from the nations bordering Mali, the junior officer who seized control of the country in a coup last month signed an accord, agreeing late Friday to return the country to constitutional rule.

The announcement was made only hours after separatist rebels in the country's north declared their independence.

Capt. Amadou Haya Sanogo emerged from his office inside the military barracks that has served the de facto seat of government for the past 16 days, ever since he and his men stormed the presidential palace, reversing over two decades of democratic rule.

Flanked by the ministers of neighboring nations, he read out the accord, which states that under Article 36 of Mali's constitution the head of the national assembly becomes interim president in the event of a vacancy of power.

"In the event of the vacancy of the president of the republic for whatever reason, or due to any absolute…
