MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - A strong earthquake hit Mexico on Wednesday, shaking buildings in the capital and sending people rushing out of offices onto the streets, though there were no early reports of major damage.



Mexico City mayor Marcelo Ebrard said on his twitter account there were no initial signs of serious damage and that key services in the capital, including its subway system and the international airport, were operating normally.

"There was a nasty crunching sound in my bathroom and everything moved," said Adela Arceo, who was looking after two young children in the central Roma neighborhood of Mexico City.

There were no initial reports of casualties.

Alike Darjeeling tea or Solapar chaddar, kesar mango from Gir will soon have its own identity. The luscious fruit is all set for registration with the Geographical Indication Registry (GIR) of India, which conveys assurance of quality and distinctiveness — essentially attributed to the place of its origin in a defined geographical locality.


Kesar mango will be the first agricultural produce from Gujarat and the second mango variety in India (Dussheri from Uttar Pradesh being the first), to get this registration.

The list of crops being a victim to unfavorable weather in Gujarat seems to be growing day-by-day. Now fluctuating temperatures coupled with foggy and cloudy weather since last couple of days in Saurashtra and Kutch regions has damaged the Kesar mango crop.

Along with foggy weather in early morning and heat waves during the day, Kesar mango crop has delayed from mid April to end of May or in June this year.







"Fog works as acid for mango plant and forces the tree to shed the small fruit. Since last one week, mango fruit have been shed from trees in several parts of Saurashtra and Kutch," said Batuksinh Jadeja of Ashapura Farm and Nursery from Kutch.

Tanga.

A Tanga-based lime producing firm, Neelkanth, has initiated a special project to save mango trees from haphazard felling at Kiomoni Village. The firm’s managing director Rashid Hamoud said recently that the goal is to preserve mango trees as well as reduce dust pollution from the factory.


Mr Hamoud said that under the project the company would buy mango trees from locals and hand them back to original owners on the condition that they will not be felled. “Villagers are not allowed to throw objects while harvesting mangoes but are required to wait until they fall down from trees on their own,” said Mr Hamoud who in 2008 teamed up with Mr Kumar Pujara to form the firm.



Mango trees have fallen victim to haphazard harvesting not only in the city but also in the region as a whole. Mango trees are being felled for timber production and charcoal making.

How much ethylene gas is enough? Can you use too much ethylene? For how long do you gas? Can you / should you use fresh air ventilation while gassing?

If you ask five different people, you might get 10 different answers <g>.

We have a number of installations, where the ripening rooms are equipped with ethylene sensor gassing control. These rooms also have carbon dioxide sensors, to control fresh air ventilation automatically to a chosen setpoint.

Through working in partnership with our ripeners, we have been able to learn some interesting things about ethylene gas control.

First, when a room starts to gas, if the gas is working, the carbon dioxide (CO2) level in the room will rise. This is a natural result of the increased respiration of the fruit, as it begins to ripen. Higher CO2 levels, create a “modified atmosphere”, displacing oxygen, and can slo…

(Reuters) - Indonesia's port in Banda Aceh remained open after an 8.7 magnitude earthquake struck on Wednesday, while India's Chennai port shut due to a tsunami watch issued for the whole Indian Ocean, two port authority officials said.

The quake struck 308 miles (500 km) southwest of the city of Banda Aceh, on the northern tip of Indonesia's Sumatra island, at a depth of 20.5 miles, the U.S. Geological survey said. (Reporting by Randy Fabi and Luke Pachymuthu; Editing by Himani Sarkar)
