Government and business must put weather-related disaster risk management at the heart of economic and fiscal planning ...

That is the message from a new Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN) report ‘Tackling Exposure; Placing Disaster Risk Management at the Heart of National Economic and Fiscal Policy’ launched today (May 9) at the African leg of the World Economic Forum (WEF).

The report carries the clearest messages yet that government and business leaders must respond swiftly and decisively to the latest climate change science, and anticipate extreme weather-related disasters as they undertake strategic policy and business planning.

2011 was the costliest year on record for disasters, with estimated global losses of £234billion (US$380 billion), it states. Losses from extreme weather-related disasters are doubling every 12 years as more people and assets are in harm’s way and the effects of climate change bite.

Perhaps most alarmingly for the global business and finance communities, climate-related disaster losses – in economic terms – are growing faster than increases in per capita Gross Dom…

NEWSFLASH: Mexican Drug Cartels organizing mango industry ...

By Will Cavan
Executive Director
International Mango Organization (IMO)

May 09, 2012

Perhaps the only way to organize the Mango Industry is with a Gun to their heads????

What the National Mango Board (NMB) has not been able to do in Seven years, the Mexican Drug cartels and Organized Crime have done in one season!

What a difference a year makes.

This time last year, Mexican mango shippers had been struggling with near breakeven FOB sales prices of $3.00 since March of 2011.

This year Mexican mango Distributors have yet to see the FOB price drop below $4.00, with most sales since late January when Mexicp began shipping in the $5.00 and up range.

The Cartels have shutdown operations so many times this season, that the IMO has lost track of the exact amount. Somewhere between three to four stopages have taken place this season.

Packing sheds have been dictated to by armed emissaries of the organized crime syndicates and volume has been affected.

INDIA: Sudden rains destroy mango crop ...

Heavy rain brings misery to farmers
Srinivaspur, May 9, 2012, DHNS :

Growers in debt turn anxious as strong gales ravage agricultural and horticultural crops.

A large number of fully grown tomato plants and ridge gourd creepers were completely damaged after heavy rain, accompanied by gutsy wind and hailstorm, lashed Kasba hobli in the taluk on Tuesday.

The rain has also destroyed mango crop.

“There was no trace of rain on Tuesday, but by evening, there was heavy storm accompanied by rain. Haystack and tin sheet roofs of some houses were blown away. After the ten-minute downpour, mangoes fell on the ground,” said a mango grower here.

Mangoes in Srinivaspur, Panasamakanahalli, Kethaganahalli, Hebbata, Unikili, Chaldiganahalli and other surrounding areas of the Kasba hobli have been destroyed. Besides, other horticultural crops like jackfruit, tomato, beans and ridge gourd too have been destroyed by the hailstone. In some places, mango trees have been uprooted.

Fidel Castro Ruiz el jefe de todos los jefes, Capo di tutti capi o boss of all bosses

Rafael Rivero Muñoz

Caracas, 03/05/2012

Wednesday, May 9th Philanthroper is for sale! Contact us for info.   $2 Supports an Orphan in Mexico for One Day
In Mexico, the government doesn't fund foster care for children who are neglected, abused or abandoned. And there's no welfare system for single parents.  Instead, orphanages are independently owned and operated, and needless to say, these orphanages receive a lot of demand and little funding.  The Corazon de Vida Foundation supports 16 orphanages in the Baja, Mexico. Remarkably, it was founded by a woman named Hilda Pacheco-Taylor, who grew up in one of these orphanages herself.  For about $2, you can sponsor a child for a day.  Give $1 Connect with us:Follow us on TwitterBecome a fan You're receiving this newsletter because you are subscribed to Philanthroper.com. PAKISTANI MANGO EXPORTERS ASK: HILLARY CLINTON, WHERE ARE YOU NOW THAT WE NEED YOU ???? .....

IMO NOTE:  The IMO has suggested that given the current options, Pakistani mango exporters should work on an agreement with India to irradiate their mangoes for export. The IMO is pleased to see that this option is finally being considered.

The only other option is irradiation at the Texas A&M Facility, and distribute from South Texas for the entire USA market. This option would require direct charters to IAH (Houston, Texas) and a much shorter cartage to the College Station Facility.

Perhaps,
NORDION or BENEBION have a suggestion???

Dear Will Cavan,

Please publish our press note given below in your routine e-letter. In fact the increased cost of irradiation at Sadex facility, IOWA and not allowing PARAS facility at Lahore to irradiate mangoes by USDA, hence are becoming the non-tariff barriers, in export of mangoes from Pakistan, in the coming season in June, 2012.

Exports of mangoes to USA from Pakistan are facing threat due to non tariff barriers like irradiation protocols
