Bamboo points way to green construction in Indonesia's Bali ...

by Staff Writers
Sibang Kaja, Indonesia (AFP) June 10, 2012

Strong, light and cheaper than steel poles, bamboo is ubiquitous across Asia as scaffolding.

So much so that in recognition of the material's versatility, the Indonesian island of Bali has made it an emblem of sustainable construction, replacing buildings of concreteand steel with far greener alternatives.

An entire school, luxury villas and even a chocolate factory are the latest structures to rise from bamboo skeletons as the plant's green credentials and strength are hailed.

The factory, which opened last year and produces organic drinking chocolate and cocoa butter, is the latest in a string of buildings on the island, including homes and businesses, to be built ofbamboo.

Erected in the village of Sibang Kaja between the resort island's smoggy capital Denpasar and the forests of Ubud, the factory is the initiative of specialty food firm Big Tree Farms, which claims the 2,550-square-metre (27,500-square-foot) facilit…

Spanish banks to get bailout. Spain left holding the bag. ...

Markets may not be impressed with Europe's latest rescue of Spanish banks, because the bailout will increase the liabilities of the Spanish government by up to €100 billion.

By Kelly Evans, CNBC.com / June 10, 2012

Spain's Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy speaks during a press conference at the Moncloa Palace, in Madrid, Sunday, June 10, 2012. Spain became the fourth and largest country to ask Europe to rescue its failing banks, a bailout of up to 100 billion euros ($125 billion) that increases the liabilities of Spain itself.

Picasso once described art as “a lie that makes us realize truth.” The same might be said about the art of European policy-making at the moment.

European officials shouldn’t be surprised if their latest unveiling—a rescue plan for Spain’s troubled banks—fails yet again to impress markets or resolve the continent’s crisis. After all, whatever the package of up to €100 billion in loans might do to calm fears about Spain’s banks for the time…

Peru, Bolivia and Chile: Old border disputes die hard and keep gas exports on hold ...

APRIL 10, 2009

Peru’s maritime border dispute with Chile, which is being decided by the International Court of Justice at The Hague, has sparked a war of words between Bolivia and Peru and exposed how geopolitical disputes dating back to a late-19th century war can disrupt energy investments and even force governments to fall as was the case in Bolivia in October 2003.

A map showing the maritime dispute between Peru and Chile. The blue line is the actual border and the red one is what Peru claims.

President Evo Morales, who said that Peru’s maritime claim with Chile could put in jeopardy his country´s chances of ever getting an outlet to the Pacific Ocean, made fun of President Alan Garcia’s weight. Contrarily, the Peruvian foreign ministry called Morales “a demagogue” and “anti-Peruvian.”

The old geopolitcal dispute with Bolivia and Chile has reinforced nationalist calls in Peru that it should not sell LNG to Chile when South America’s first liquefaction plant comes online in 2010.

Anti Mafia prosecutors have asked the secretive Vatican Bank to disclose details of an account held by a priest in connection with a money laundering and fraud investigation, it emerged on Sunday.

Father Treppiedi, 36, was serving as a priest in Alcamo, near Trapani, said to be the richest parish on the Mafia's island stronghold of Sicily

The official request was made more than a month ago but so far the Vatican Bank, known as the Institute for Religious Works, has refused to disclose any records of the account held by father Ninni Treppiedi – who is currently suspended from serving as a priest.

Investigators want to know more about vast sums of money that are said to have passed through his account to establish if they were money laundering operations by on the run Mafia Godfather, Matteo Messina Denaro.

The reports emerged in the Italian media and came just two weeks after the head of the Vatican Bank, Ettore Gotti Tedeschi, was sacked ami…

PAKISTAN: Pamper your palate as juicy and tangy mangoes hit market ...

Monday, June 11, 2012

ISLAMABAD: Almost every one of us waits for summer so we pamper our palate with juicy and tangy mangoes. So, the wait is over as yummy and mouth-watering fruit has landed in the markets of Islamabad and Rawalpindi. It has a special delight to peel off and have a bite of ripe mango, post-lunch or in hot afternoon.

From ‘Sindhri’ to ‘Malda’ and ‘Langra’, different varieties of the pulpy fruit are seen filled in most of the racks in any fruit shop besides the vendors roaming around to sell the delicious fruit. But owing to high prices, the mango is currently unaffordable for low-income class, though privileged ones are fully enjoying the bites of the `king of fruits’.

The fruit is priced from Rs 80 to 120 per kilogramme; however it is on downward trend as peak season is approaching after mid-June. Nowadays, the mangoes’ variety available in markets is coming from Sindh, as the production from Punjab gardens is yet to hit the market to help further reduce prices.

Euro 2012: Spain 1-1 Italy
By Ben Smith BBC Sport

Cesc Fabregas salvaged a point for Spain as the champions began the defence of their European title with a pulsating encounter in Gdansk.

The Barcelona midfielder fired in after a clever pass by David Silva as Spain came from a goal down against Italy to draw the opening match of Group C.

Substitute Antonio Di Natale had given Italy a deserved lead on the hour mark.

Spain might have snatched all three points but Fernando Torres spurned a succession of late chances.

Analysis
Danny MillsFootball Analyst

"The Italians in the first half were exceptional. Tactically they got it right and they made Casillas make four good saves. After they scored, Spain pushed on a bit more and upped their tempo. Both teams had chances to win and it was a thoroughly entertaining game. A draw is a fair result. If the Italians continue to play this well and get through the group they really could be a threat."
