Family Fact of the Week: Why Fathers Matter

Posted By Sarah Torre
On June 14, 2012 @ 3:30 pm

In Family and Religion

This weekend, many Americans will be scouring stores for the latest tech toys or tools to express their gratitude to Dad this Father’s Day. While many will thank their fathers for the memories of fishing trips and driving lessons, the benefits of a father’s care and concern extend far beyond sports knowledge and handy-man skills.

As research on Heritage’s FamilyFacts.org [1] demonstrates, a father’s presence and involvement can have a significant impact [2] on his child’s social, economic, and relational well-being. Adolescents who spend leisure time with their fathers, eat meals together, and ask for Dad’s help with homework tend to earn better grades in school. Close father–teen bonds also help counteract the negative influence of peer pressure to use drugs, and they dec…

Meteorological summer has begun in the Northern Hemisphere, but what is happening right now in the arctic could dramatically affect the weather you confront come December.

This past winter was the warmest in U.S. history whereas eastern Europe was stuck in a deadly deep freeze with snow piled up to the rooftops.

The winter before, however, it was the U.S. that got clobbered.
What's going on? What will happen this year?

We may finally have some answers.

A new analysis published today in Oceanography by atmospheric scientists Charles Greene and Bruce Monger at Cornell University traces the severity of winter to the extent of summer melting of arctic sea ice.

An increase in melting is causing fundamental changes in the jet stream—the primary pressure gradient in the atmosphere that most af…

Chilean carrier has taken delivery of the 8,000-TEU Tolten, sixth of seven ordered from Samsung Heavy Industries

CSAV said it secured a $90 million 12-year loan from Germany’s DVB bank to complete the financing of the last two container ships out of a total of seven ordered from the Samsung Heavy Industries shipyard in South Korea.

The Chilean carrier took delivery this week of one of these two ships, the Tolten, which, with a capacity of 8,000 20-foot-equivalent units, is the largest in its fleet.

The Tolten joins the Teno, Tubul, Tempanos, Torrente and Tucapel, which were delivered between August 2011 and January 2012. The remaining ship, the Tirua, will be delivered later this year to complete the fleet.

CSAV said the acquisition of these ships is an important part of its strategy …
