The dollar is now corporate America's worst enemy ...

By Nin-Hai Tseng, Writer August 1, 2012: 11:22 AM ET

Listen in to the earnings calls from multinationals this quarter and you'll hear a common refrain: Fear the stronger dollar.

FORTUNE – If there was a chorus to be sung this earnings season, CEOs would probably reference the mighty greenback in harmony. It's one of the biggest threats to profits.

A stronger dollar isn't always bad news for corporate America. But as the growth of earnings decelerates in the second quarter, CEOs from McDonald's (MCD) to Colgate-Palmolive (CL) say that an appreciating dollar has been bad for business lately. Not only does it make products more expensive, but it also means sales made overseas aren't worth as much when converted into a stronger greenback.

To be sure, most companies generally prepare for fluctuating exchange rates. They could raise prices, for instance. But the pace at which the dollar has strengthened in the three months ending in June has surprised most executives.

Rum parting the ways between US and the Caribbean ...

Published:

Ronald Sanders

The rum industry in the non-US countries in the Caribbean is now under serious threat. At risk are the jobs of 15,000 workers directly employed in the industry and another 60,000 jobs that benefit from it. Apart from employment, non-US Caribbean countries face the loss, annually, of US$700 million in foreign exchange and over US$250 million in tax revenues at a time they can ill afford it.

There is evidence that Barbados is already being adversely affected and the Dominican Republic, Guyana, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago are under immediate threat.

As I pointed out in a commentary in May this year, the problem has not arisen out of direct action by the US government. It has originated in Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands (USVI) both of which have been long-time rum producers in competition with other Caribbean manufacturers.

Now, these two US affiliates are taking advantage of US government refunds to them of excise taxes on rum…

South Africa's Oscar Pistorius, left, and Jamaica's Rusheen McDonald compete in a men's 400-meter heat during the athletics in the Olympic Stadium.

LONDON (AP) —

Oscar Pistorius took off and the click-click-clicking of carbon on the track was all but drowned out by the 80,000 fans who were on hand to watch him make Olympic history.

He picked up speed in the back straightaway, cruised past an opponent or two, and by the end, the "Blade Runner" was coasting in for a stress-free success.

Typical. Except this time, it was anything but that.

Finally racing where he always felt he belonged, the South African became the first amputee to compete on the track at an Olympics, finishing second in his 400-meter heat Saturday to easily advance to the next round.

Pistorius, a double-amputee who runs on carbon-fiber blades, circled the oval in 45.44 sec…
