What is the current Status of FSMA ???

The impact of the forthcoming Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) will extend beyond U.S. produce companies.


Octavio Carranza, Mexico’s Director General of food safety, aquaculture and fisheries has said Mexico’s food safety program will recognize FSMA once it is in place. 


He went on to say that Mexico will be compatible with FSMA and other international standards. 

His comments were reported by ThePacker.com  .


Mr. Carranza spoke March 22 at the America Trades Produce conference. The conference was hosted by the Fresh Produce Association the Texas Produce Association.

As the Mexican mango season ends, the investigation of a salmonella outbreak linked to Daniella-brand mangoes appears to be far from finished, with hard evidence of the pathogen on Mexican Daniella mangoes elusive.




The Food and Drug Administration, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and state and local officials were still investigating the multistate outbreak of Salmonella Braenderup as of Sept. 6.




One FDA official, speaking anonymously, said the traceback investigation was still continuing but FDA officials had not yet sent a team to Mexico.



FDA spokesman Sebastian Cianci said officials in California, Canada and at the FDA continue to work to identify other brands and sources of mangoes that may be associated with the illnesses in the U.S.

The reported execution of a top member of Colombia's FARC guerrillas could be a sign that the country's largest rebel army underwent an internal purge before it began preliminary talks with the government with an aim to begin peace negotiations.











On September 3, Colombian think tank Corporacion Nuevo Arco Iris reported that a high-ranking leader of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) had been stripped of his command and executed in January, just a month before rebels began to explore the possibility of peace talks with the government. Negotiations are slated to begin in October.

Israel: The search for new mango varieties ...

The Shoham Organisation was set up in 1984 and specialises in the cultivation and post harvest handling of mango and pomegranate. Their produce is sold both domestically and in the international marketplace.




Each year the organisation ships around 6,000 tonnes of mango to European markets. This year looks set to be a satisfactory year, but could higher figures than this be achievable? 



CEO and Marketing Manager, Guy Shoham, has been explaining that current market trends are forcing Israeli mango producers to switch to newer varieties. 




The varieties most often grown in the country currently, Kent and Keitt, are well known for their excellent quality, sweetness and flavour, but this is not always enough to impress the modern consumer. 



Because, while they taste good, the consumer often buys with their eyes and what they want to see, when it comes to mangoes, is plenty of blush.

DANIELLA RECALL: Salmonella scare takes its toll on unassociated mango varieties ...

Many retailers have made knee-jerk reactions to a salmonella scare in North America with a push away from all Mexican mangoes, despite authorities linking the problem to just one specific variety from northern Sinaloa. 



The U.S. National Mango Board (NMB) is urging retailers to contact suppliers to check whether their varieties are affected by the situation, raising awareness of the exact PLU codes of the mangoes concerned.

US: Mango PLU Codes and voluntary recalls




Following the voluntary recall of certain varieties of mangos, the National Mango Board (NMB) is supporting the industry-wide response to ensure the safety and quality of fresh mangos. 


NMB’s work includes working directly with the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA), members of the NMB and others to provide necessary information to help determine the scope and source of illness that have led to the voluntary recalls. 




As part of the FDA’s investigation, the agency has provided updates on its website regarding mango and mango-containing products that have been voluntarily recalled by suppliers and retailers. 


In particular, FDA has highlighted that the voluntary recall includes mangos sold between July 12 and Aug. 29, 2012, with PLU codes 4051, 4959, 4311 4584 and 3114.*

The mango season has kicked off in the Top End this week ahead of a predicted bumper season.



Greg Myer from Noonamah has 900 mango trees and is one of the first producers to start picking in the Darwin region.



But he is tight-lipped on the key to an early harvest.



"Everyone has their own little secret, but if we all knew we would be millionaires."

However, he does admit a solid watering program is critical.

"We water fairly heavily here, I'm just a great believer in once they do flower and set fruit that you pump the water into them."




Greg says the southern markets are paying a premium for the first shipments of fruit.

"The mangos we picked on the weekend hit the market this morning and I think top was $75 per tray, which you know, if you get that across the season then you would be laughing."
