Could 'fiscal cliff' push US into recession? Four questions answered ...

Congress’s most trusted budgetkeepers – the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) – warned in a report Tuesday that if Congress does not deal with a raft of fiscal measures by Dec. 31, some $560 billion in drastic budget cuts and tax hikes will result.

On one hand, that would cut the US federal deficit in half. On the other, it “probably” would send the US into recession, the report says. So what is the fiscal cliff and what is Congress doing about it?

1. What is the fiscal cliff?

The fiscal cliff is Washington shorthand for the huge number of significant provisions that will either expire or take effect at midnight on Dec. 31 if Congress does nothing. The implications both for the US budget and for American taxpayers would be massive.

RAJKOT: Villagers lined up on Khambha-Rajula highway selling fruits resembling mangoes caught the attention of businessman Girish Savani who was on his way to Diu for a vacation.

When Savani stopped his car, he was surprised to know these were indeed kesar mangoes. Savani readily purchased 5 kg for Rs 1,000.

Not only travellers but farmers too are stunned by the sudden arrival of kesar mangoes, essentially a summer fruit, amidst the chill of winter.

Orchards in several villages of Junagadhand Amreli districts on the periphery of the Gir forest are seeing kesars dangling on the trees, ready to be devoured.

"We were surprised to see the flowering of kesar fruits in winter. There is no difference in the size and taste of the fruit that grows in summer," said Salim Malviya, who owns a mango orchard sprawling 25 bighas near Savark…

PAKISTAN LOOKS TO HOT WATER TREATMENT FOR MANGO EXPORTS ...

MULTAN: The research on hot water treatment of mango against some quarantine diseases and white fly has proved successful, prompting Punjab Agriculture Research Board officials to extend the research component of a Rs9.1 million-project by a year to reconfirm results.

The research focused on four mango varieties, including Chaunsa Samar Bahisht, White Chaunsa, Fajri and Sindhri, regarding control of diseases.

The project managers will make the hot water treatment service available on commercial basis to growers or mango exporters by the fourth year of the project for export of disease-free fruit to enable them to earn foreign exchange.

The project is passing through its third year at the Mango Research Institute.
