Why Chavez keeps his cancer under wraps

By Andrew Cawthorne

CARACAS | Fri Dec 21, 2012 8:49pm EST

(Reuters) - Venezuela's opposition mocked President Hugo Chavez's chosen successor Nicolas Maduro on Friday as a "poor copy" of his boss who should be promoting national unity rather than insulting opponents during a delicate time for the South American nation.

In power since 1999, Chavez named vice president and foreign minister Maduro as his preferred replacement should he be incapacitated by the cancer he is battling in Cuba.

A TRAY OF MANGOES EVERY MONTH OF THE YEAR ...

PARAGUAY: Waiting For Mango Season 2012 - 2013 ...

I found fresh mangoes hard to come by in the States. When I did track them down they often required a pretty penny before I could make them mine and take them home.

Here in Paraguay there are mango trees in nearly every backyard.

Ever since arriving in Paraguay in June we’ve been awaiting this magical mango season and hearing stories about how there are far more mangoes than the towns can possibly eat. Isaiah and I have been joking (or are we?) that our town won’t have this excess problem now that we’ve arrived!

We’ve identified the trees that will one day produce the juicy fruit and dreamed up different ways we can eat mangoes. Smoothies, chutneys, salsas, cold soups! Isaiah even has plans to build a solar food dryer.

Now that it’s December, we can see the fruits appearing on the trees.

We’ve watched their size increase and their color begin to change.

I often hear myself asking the locals when the mangoes are usually ripe for the plucking – just to make sure that I’m set and ready. And…

KENYA: Laikipia farmers turn to mango crop after losses ...

THOUGH MANY OF THE MANGO TREES HAVE NOT REACHED FOUR FEET IN HEIGHT, FARMERS ARE HARVESTING HEALTH AND FULLY DEVELOPED FRUITS, SOME WEIGHING OVER 700 GRAMS

SPECIAL REPORT BY XINHUA

CORRESPONDENT EJIDIAH WANGUI

NAIROBI (Xinhua) -- Tired of low yields and decreased income, farmers in Laikipia County have taken up mango farming as an alternative source of income.

Traditionally, most of the small-scale farmers have been known to grow wheat, maize and beans in their farms but this is slowing changing.

The majority of the farmers have less than ten acres of land. Large scale farmers are known for their ranching and private game sanctuaries.

“With fluctuation of farm-gate prices of cereals and other food products , most farmers in this region have opted for safe fruits like mangoes and other fruits to act as cushion and supplement the fragile financial situations,” says Mburu Waiganjo, a farmer.

Waiganjo has planted one and a half acres of mangoes on his five-acre farm. However, this farmer has ot…

Singer Jenni Rivera

The plane crash in which Mexican American singer Jenni Rivera and five others died last week may have been related to a spat she allegedly had with the Zetas, an unidentified source told the Huffington Post, although these claims have not been confirmed.

The plane crash that caused the death of 43-year old California-born singer Jenni Rivera on December 9 is still under investigation by US and Mexican authorities.

However, according to a recent article published by a Huffington Post blogger, the crash could have been related to the superstar’s alleged clash with Mexican criminal organization the Zetas, an anonymous source told the news website.

According to the source, the criminal organization wanted to use Rivera's legitimate businesses to launder illicit cash, a demand the superstar reportedly refused.

The AP, meanwhile, has reported that the DEA is investigating the owner of the crashed plane, who "has a long…
