Anti-Corruption

STUDENTS IN EASTERN SUDAN PARTICIPATE IN ARTISTIC COMPETITION ON THE OCCASION OF THE INTERNATIONAL ANTI-CORRUPTION DAY, 2012.

Corruption undermines human development and democracy. It reduces access to public services by diverting public resources for private gain.

The real costs of corruption were highlighted by the UN Secretary-General in his 2009 statement for the International Anti-Corruption Day:

"When public money is stolen for private gain, it means fewer resources to build schools, hospitals, roads and water treatment facilities. When foreign aid is diverted into private bank accounts, major infrastructure projects come to a halt. Corruption enables fake or substandard medicines to be dumped on the market, and hazardous waste to be dumped in landfill sites and in oceans. The vulnerable suffer first and worst."

Corruption hinders economic development by distorting markets and damaging private sector integrity.

Battling giant agribusinesses isn’t just confined to Washington.

This year, the war is being fought in what used to be a pristine, quiet riparian woodland stretch in Macon County Tennessee.

That’s where Tennessee’s oldest and largest organic farm has been duking it out with a Tyson food subsidiary.

Long Hungry Creek Farm is owned by Jeff Poppen, otherwise known as “The Barefoot Farmer” in his numerous PBS appearances.

For more than a year Jeff fought a battle with his neighbors, who were seeking to build a Tyson chicken CAFO within a hundred yards of Jeff’s home and a large swath of his organic farm.

He lost.

The neighbors own more than 70 acres on which they could have built, but in a complete dis…

Senegalese mango producers and exporters learnt about European Union packaging standards during a recent two-day workshop in Dakar, hosted by the International Trade Centre (ITC).

The training was based on diagnostic study held in June, and looked at packaging and accessories for the packaging of fresh mango.

The training session was held concurrently with the Agribusiness Forum, which allowed attendees to participate in conferences and business-to-business meetings as well.

The workshop, held on 27-28 November, which attracted participants from a local packaging company, cooperatives and the Senegalese government, included sessions on corrugated boxes for fresh mangoes and packaging for both fresh and processed — or value-added — mango products.

Topics such as the functioning of the packaging supply chain, establishing packaging specificat…
