Is the Amazon Rainforest Drying Out ??? ...

The trees and vegetation of the Peruvian Amazon are adapting to a warmer, drier future—but can they adapt fast enough?

LAND CLEARING: Smoke rises from a fire set to clear land for farming or pasture outside Tarapoto, Peru. Roads and fields fragment the forest, drying it faster, changing precipitation patterns and making it more difficult for species to shift their ranges to adapt to climate change.Image: © BARBARA FRASER

TARAPOTO, Peru—For tropical ecologist Gregory Asner, flying over the Peruvian Amazon from the town of Tarapoto is like traveling back in time.

Modern houses, rice paddies and oil palm plantations give way to steep, forested mountains and then to green, unbroken forest that curves toward the horizon.

Suddenly the tree canopy below the twin-engine plane turns a mottled gray-brown, a sign of drought damage that he estimates may affect as many as half the trees.

In this remote corner of Peru’s Ucayali region, Asner, a tropical ecologist at the Carnegie Instit…

Tainted mangoes force recalls

Things looked pretty rosy in June for mango grower-shippers. Mexico was sending record volumes to the U.S., and there was ample supply for promotions.

Then in August, salmonella outbreaks cast a pall on the optimism. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 127 people fell ill from a 15-state salmonella outbreak linked to Mexican mangoes from Agricola Daniella. No deaths were attributed to the outbreak.

As many as 1 million Daniella-brand mangoes from 15 companies were recalled from late August to late September.

Mexico’s mango season was winding down when the outbreak news hit...

THE CONFLICTS OF INTEREST THAT KEEP THE FOOD SAFETY MODERNIZATION ACT (FSMA) FROM EVER BECOMING AN EFFECTIVE TOOL TO PROTECT CONSUMER ....

IMO NOTE:

Why does Beef industry report to USDA and Fruits and Vegetables report to FDA ???

The FDA knows next to nothing about the Agricultural Field ... Why Did Cattle Ranchers get to be regulated by an entity that selects from its arena...Most USDA Secretarys are former Cattlemen or represents states that have major Beef and Pork industries that they must appease.

Yet Food and Drug Administration (FDA) calls upon Scientists that come from the medical arena (Example: Deputy Administrator Michael Taylor who former worked for Monsanto)

IMO is calling on the FDA to split off into a FOOD SAFETY ADMINISTRATION (FSA) and put all food under that umbrella.

The FDA does not have sufficient manpower to safely audit our food supply.

Progress Reports

The FDA intends to provide regular updates to inform the public and Congress on its progress in implementing the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). This summary does not reference all actions taken by FDA.
