An estimated 79 million pounds of avocados are expected to be served at parties and other events surrounding the Super Bowl Feb. 3, 2013.

That’s enough avocados to fill a football field end zone to end zone 30 feet deep, according to a news release from the Irvine, Calif.-based Hass Avocado Board.

This year’s expected total would top last year’s by close to 8 million pounds. Thirteen years ago, 8 million pounds of avocados were served around the Super Bowl.

The record volumes expected this year are due to continued soaring demand and an enormous Mexican crop.

About 986 million pounds of Mexican avocados will be shipped to the U.S. in 2012-13, up from 782 million pounds in 2011-12, according to the Association of Michoacán State Avocado Producers and Packers (APEAM).

SUSTAINABILITY: COMPANY SEEKS TO ELIMINATE CARDBOARD FROM SUPPLY CHAIN ...

Notbox Sustainable Packaging Solution Coming to North America

By Harry Stevens | January 14th, 2013

The Notbox Company, a seven-year-old venture led by former Wall Street financier Thomas Hellman, has announced that it is bringing its “leaner, meaner and greener” packaging solution to North America.

The London-based Notbox, which has been serving European clients for several years, offers reusable packaging products that provide alternatives to unsustainable cardboard packaging.

“Currently, cardboard is used to ship 90 percent of all products in the U.S. but the growing focus towards sustainability by businesses and consumers makes this the perfect time to bring Notbox to the market,” said Hellman, who spent 25 years as an institutional trader on Wall Street.

He hopes his innovative products will help his company grab a piece of the $119 billion North American packaging market.

“Reducing corrugated cardboard excess is one of the fastest and most effective steps a company can take to red…

Apples Are Covered, Kale Is Exempt: A Look at the Proposed Produce Safety Rule

BY HELENA BOTTEMILLER | JANUARY 17, 2013

Last week Food Safety News published an article noting that nearly 80 percent of produce growers will be exempt from the landmark proposed rule that would for the first time require national preventative standards for the produce industry.

We got feedback from a handful of readers who took issue with our headline because, while it is true that about 8 in 10 growers are exempt from the new rule, the vast majority of produce Americans consume would be covered by the measure.

Most stakeholders agree the proposal is a huge step toward building a more preventive food safety system. The rule focuses on five areas: agricultural water, farm worker hygiene, manure and other additions to the soil, animals in growing areas and equipment, tools, and buildings (see here for an overview of the rule).

So what exactly is covered and what’s not?

11 MOST "EXOTIC" TROPICAL FRUIT IN THE WORLD ...

IMO NOTE:

Mango growers in particular should consider diversifying part of their production into these alternative crops that are sought after by markets around the world...

11. Carambola - Star Fruit

Named very appropriately for the shape into which this fruit grows, the carambola is also widely known as starfruit.

It grows mainly in SE Asia, though horticulturalists say that it could be grown easily in any other tropical location.

Looking exactly like a five-pointed star when sliced, this sweet and popular fruit is not just delicious, but also rich in vitamin C and anti-oxidants, while being low in acid, sugar and sodium.

OPTIMISTIC: Indian mangoes may soon enter South African market ...

January 17th, 2013

Indian mangoes could be on their way to South Africa as soon as the 2013 season, according to a senior official at the country’s agricultural authority.

“We are just awaiting clearance from them. The phytosanitary measures have to be decided. So we are waiting for that,” said Vinod Kaul, deputy general manager at India’s Agriculture & Processed Food Products Export Development Authority.

“It depends on when clearance is given because our mango season starts from early March and lasts until mid-August. So if the clearance comes during this period, we will be able to ship something this year.”

Kaul explained, however, that even with pending approval, India shouldn’t expect to export large volumes to South Africa just yet. Exporters will still need to make deals with importers to get the ball rolling.

Once contacts are established, Kaul anticipates a bright future on the South African market.

MEXICAN MANGO MAFIA: THE MONEY TRAIL BY STRATFOR ...

Mexican cartels are some of the world's most profitable retailers.

When a kilogram of cocaine in New York fetches ten times what it costs where it's produced ‒ Colombia ‒ it's no surprise that competition for these profit margins is deadly.

A clear analysis must look beyond the violence and evaluate the business interests ‒ and bankrolls ‒ of Mexican cartels.

Specific acts of violence grab most of the spotlight in the mainstream media, but Stratfor looks beyond the story lines and focuses on significant trends and developments in cartel activity.

We offer a level of analysis and understanding of global affairs ‒ from Mexican cartels to the eurozone crisis ‒ that is unavailable anywhere else!
