Rejected: All OCU Units Vote No on Contract for West Coast Ports ...

After finally hearing the official tally of votes late Thursday from the union representing office clerical workers in Los Angeles-Long Beach, the organization that represents waterfront employers announced that all of the union's bargaining units rejected the tentative contract that was agreed to on Dec. 4.

The Los Angeles/Long Beach Harbor Employers Association said the nation's largest port complex was, however, working normally on Thursday.

The Office Clerical Unit of International Longshore and Warehouse UnionLocal 63 voted Wednesday on a new contract that is scheduled to run until 2016. The office workers who process documentation at shipping lines and marine terminals had been working without a contract since Jun 2010.

In negotiations in late November and early December leading up to the Dec. 4 tentative contract agreement, office workers picketed 10 of the 14 terminals at the ports. The ILWU dockworkers refused to cross the picket lines, and the 10 terminals were shut dow…

BREAKING: Venezuela Devalues Its Currency ...

Matthew Boesler | 10 minutes ago

Venezuela just undertook a massive currency devaluation, repegging the bolivar to a rate of 6.3 per U.S. dollar from a previous exchange rate of 4.3 bolivars per dollar, reports Bloomberg.

The government also announced that it would shutter the a Venezuelan currency exchange system known as SITME.

Given the currency devaluation underway in other economies around the world right now – notably, Japan – a few are calling this Venezuela's foray into the global "currency war" between countries trying to devalue their currencies in order to increase export competitiveness.

However, Venezuela appears to be having the exact opposite problem. The country is experiencing a shortage of U.S. dollars, which is making it hard for the country to pay for imports.

Bloomberg's Corina Pons & Nathan Crooks reported on Monday:

The government isn’t considering a devaluation at the moment given its strong balance of payments, the official sai…

WEST COAST PORTS IN JEOPARDY ONCE AGAIN ...

Three of the more than a dozen bargaining units representing office clerical workers in Los Angeles-Long Beach sent employers and union leaders scrambling Thursday by rejecting a tentative contract agreement that was reached in December.

The Office Clerical Unit of International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 63 and waterfront employers were meeting Thursday to develop a response to the surprising vote that took place late Wednesday.

Union and management representatives on Thursday were attempting to determine what the next move should be.

One school of thought believes that all units must approve the agreement or there is no contract.

Another view is that the contract is valid at those units that approved the agreement, and negotiations should resume with the three that rejected it.

CENTER FOR SCIENCE IN THE PUBLIC INTEREST (CSPI) TAKES ON GIRL SCOUTS OVER "MANGO" COOKIES ...

Will,

The Girl Scouts of the USA recently introduced a new addition to its line of cookies, Mango Cremes with Nutrifusion. This new cookie is being marketed as a “delicious new way to get your vitamins.”

It’s bad enough that the Girl Scouts enlists young girls to sell cookies to raise money, but it shouldn’t pretend that its new cookies are nutritionally equivalent to fruit.

Sweet baked goods, including cookies, are a leading source of calories, sugars, and fats in Americans’ diets. Fortifying cookies with vitamins doesn't make them any healthier.

The marketing for Mango Cremes cookies is misleading and sends the wrong message to Girl Scouts and its customers, and is especially disappointing from an organization that claims to teach its members to “adopt healthy fitness and eating habits.”

In honor of National Girl Scout Cookie Day today (February 8th), please Tweet at the Girl Scouts and urge them to stop promoting Mango Cremes with NutriFusion as healthful.

And please share thi…

MEXICAN MANGO MAFIA: Chapito Isidro, Mexico's Newest Kingpin ...

Chapito Isidro, recently added to the US Kingpin List

US authorities have recently trained their crosshairs on Fausto Isidro Meza Flores, "Chapito Isidro," a low-profile Sinaloan trafficker who appears to be a major generator of violence in northwestern Mexico.

As InSight Crime reported, the US Treasury Department announced on January 17 that Meza Flores’s group was being formally classified as a drug trafficking organization. This designation applies to Chapito Isidro, eight family members, and three businesses, and gives the US far greater power to seize their assets. Days after, reports began to surface that some of the companies in question had received public contracts, meaning that Mexican government agencies appear to have been, in effect, subsidizing the growth of businesses supporting organized crime.

InSight Crime Analysis

The announcement seemed to come out of nowhere, demonstrating the low profile with which Chapi…
