(eTN) - AfricaStay, a South Africa-based tour operator, launched nonstop charter flights yesterday between Johannesburg and Zanzibar, now operating every Tuesday and using a B737-800 with a configuration of 185 seats, all economy.

The flights are reportedly a “replacement” for the services operated until last year by now defunct 1Time, once more offering South African travelers direct access to the Spice Island.

Tourism sources on Zanzibar have welcomed the new flight and expressed their hope that the possible second flight during the high season could add even greater numbers of visitors, helping to fill beds in the resorts across the island.

AfricaStay’s Cobus Vermeulen, Director for Sales and Marketing, was quoted to this correspondent by a Zanzibar-based source as having said that the new connection would be reasonably priced and ticket-only sales are available besides their packa…

Middle East faces alarming water loss ...

by Staff Writers
Beirut, Lebanon (UPI) Mar 15, 2013

The Middle East, one of the most arid regions on Earth, is facing a critical water crisis because of poor management and a 2007 drought, the American Geophysical Union warns in a new report.

It published a NASA study that showed in 2003-09 the Middle East lost a volume of water equivalent to the needs of up to 100 million people in the region. That amount of fresh water is almost the size of the Dead Sea shared by Israel and Jordan.

The region has long grappled with several major disputes over water involving Israel, Jordan, the Palestinians, Egypt, Sudan, Iraq, Iran, Syria, Turkey and Yemen, and these are getting more serious as water levels fall.

The latest report underlines concerns that the water crisis is worsening almost by the day at a time when the region is engulfed in political turmoil. This is largely due to the upheavals of the so-called Arab Spring in which four longtime dictators were toppled, triggering bloodshed and power …

PAKISTAN: Mango growers for post-harvest facilities ..

By: APP | March 19, 2013

MULTAN - Mango Growers Association (MGA) Multan president Major (r) Muhammad Tariq Khan said on Monday that Pakistan can triple its earning from fruits and vegetables exports provided post-harvest and value addition facilities are made available at mango growing areas of South Punjab including Multan.

He said that South Punjab including Multan contributes around 72pc of the national mango production and some 70pc of exportable fruit is grown in mango clusters particularly Multan and Rahimyar Khan.

However, despite this contribution, the post harvest, value addition and infrastructure facilities were provided at other mango growing areas which defies logic, he added. He said that Multan must have large scale Vapour Heat Treatment (VHP) plant that can treat mango at 46C for an hour to enable it find its way to the lucrative market, Japan.

He added that country’s fruit and vegetable exports can fetch triple the existing revenue provided we meet China and South Kor…
