Investigan nexos de presunto narco colombiano y Gobierno de Costa Rica ...

Por: JOSÉ MELÉNDEZ |

WORLD WILDLIFE FUND (WWF) : What is On Balance?

DATE:May 15, 2013
AUTHOR:Nick Conger

One day about two years ago, Jason Clay said to me, “If we don’t change the way we produce food and fiber, as environmentalists, we can turn off the lights and go home. There won’t be any biodiversity left to protect.”

That struck me in a profound way.

Until recently, this thinking seemed lost on some in the environmental movement.

Conservation is no longer solely defined by confronting poachers in the field or setting aside untouched land (though still critical). If we’re going to save the planet, we need to confront the drivers of habitat loss and degradation directly.

In many ways, On Balance was spawned that day, and on April 4 2013, it blossomed into this blog.

On Balance is about ideas to bring our environmental footprint back into balance with nature. In the first month, we posted about illegal products in the timber supply chain, efforts to quantify the true value of nature and cringe-worthy facts about our growing environmental footprint.

Understanding Pena Nieto's Approach to the Cartels

By Scott Stewart
Vice President of Analysis

Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto's approach to combating Mexican drug cartels has been a much-discussed topic since well before he was elected.

Indeed, in June 2011 -- more than a year before the July 2012 Mexican presidential election -- I wrote an analysis discussing rumors that, if elected, Pena Nieto was going to attempt to reach some sort of accommodation with Mexico's drug cartels in order to bring down the level of violence.

Such rumors were certainly understandable, given the arrangement that had existed for many years between some senior members of Pena Nieto's Institutional Revolutionary Party and some powerful cartel figures during the Institutional Revolutionary Party's long reign in Mexico prior to the election of Vicente Fox of the National Action Party in 2000. However, as we argued in 2011 and repeated in March 2013, much has changed in Mexico since 2000, and the new rea…

Camposol positive on future prospects

Group reports on higher first quarter sales and sees "excellent" long-term growth propects for its products

Peruvian fresh produce supplier Camposol Holding has reported on sales and earnings growth for the opening quarter of 2013, while outlining its expectations for a positive long-term future.

For the three-month period the group reported sales of US$40.6m (€31m), representing growth of 8.1 per cent on the same period of 2012, largely the result of greater volumes of mango sold and higher prices for its fresh white asparagus.

Earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) before fair value adjustments came in at US$4m, marking an 11.2 per cent increase on the previous year, with EBITDA margin increasing to 9.9 per cent.

"The long term growth prospects for exotic fruit and vegetable…

by @DolarToday - May 14, 2013 in Noticias
