I hate to blaspheme any mango, but every maven, must, at some juncture, blaspheme something.

Today a variety of mango called Tommy Atkins is going to take the hit. And I’m not sorry, Tommy.

You’ll often see *them* (the Tommys) displayed in the produce aisle as “red mangoes.”

For the uninitiated, here’s exactly what the red charlatans look like. (Identifying the suspect is the starting point in any prosecution…)

A Tommy looks pretty good, eh?

Let me tell you, the beautiful red color is deceiving.

Here’s the rub of mango truth:

by @DolarToday - May 30, 2013

Netherlands: High mango prices due to Brazilian shortage

The mango season up to now is running much differently than previous years. According to Eryvan Pires from Fruitmarket, there has been an enormous shortage on the market and this causes very high prices.

"After Peru stopped supplying, there was very little coming from other destinations such as Costa Rica and Peru. Brazil is currently experiencing the worst drought in the last 40 years. This had a large impact of mango production followed by the export. There were far too little volumes in the market."

Decline in export from Brazil

He shares that the prices had increased up to 8 Euro for almost all varieties. "At the moment, with the new season with mango's from West Africa, the prices will adjust. There is still a shortage. I don't know how many less are coming from Brazil but if the prices are any indication, it will be significant. Brazil usually exports around 50 to 70 containers per week to Europe and this season it was around 30 containers per week. There wa…

Capriles: “No dejen sola a Venezuela”

(…) No nos dejen solos, hermanos de Colombia”.

‘WORLD’S NO 1′ MANGO EXPORT MARKET MAY BE MISSED AGAIN

Climate changes have continuously taken their toll on Pakistan over the last few years – whether it’s an increase in flooding or a change in weather patterns.

As a result, mango lovers are still waiting for the arrival of this year’s full-fledged mango crop in the market, which has been delayed because of changes in weather patterns.

Stakeholders believe that Sindh would have come up with a larger mango crop had weather conditions not been erratic. An overall 20 percent drop in production is likely due to the late maturation of the fruit and hailstorms.

Early varieties of mango like Almas, Saroli and Daseri are slowly reaching the market but mango afficiniados are still anxiously waiting for the seasonal favourite ‘Sindhri’ –according to market players they will have to wait for another one week or so.

POWER OF THE BARCODE : Produce companies targeted in cause-related ‘Buycott’ smartphone app

May 30th, 2013

A new smartphone app claims to help consumers support or fight against causes through the products they buy, whether it be over issues like genetically modified food (GMO) labeling, seed access, animal welfare, human rights, fair trade or chemical use in food products.

The Buycott app allows consumers to choose from a range of causes they support or stand against, with a corresponding list of companies whose products either match or clash with their views. Many companies associated with the produce industry will have reason for concern should the app disseminate widely, but others could potentially benefit from it.

“Scan a barcode with the Buycott app and it will try to determine what the product is and who owns it. Buycott will then trace the product’s ownership back to its top parent company and cross-check this company against the campaigns that you’ve joined before telling you whether it found a conflict,” Buycott Inc mentions on its website.

OVER ONE BILLION DOLLARS INVESTED WILL MAKE PORT OF MIAMI COMPETITIVE ...

Obama Says Miami Port Project Is Model For Infrastructure Investment Nationwide

By ARIANNA PROTHERO

President Obama traveled to PortMiami Friday to talk about the importance of the nation’s infrastructure to the economy. He outlined a plan for state and local governments to fund large-scale infrastructure projects through private sector partnerships.

PortMiami provided the perfect backdrop for the announcement.

The port is undergoing a series of multimillion-dollar improvements including a $915 million project to dig a tunnel under Biscayne Bay that will directly connect the port to I-395.

During his speech, President Obama emphasized that one of the most important things the country can do to create jobs and strengthen the economy is to invest in its infrastructure.

He pointed to the tunnel project—and the way it was funded by city, county and state governments—as an example of how he wants the private and public sectors to work together.

“They partnered with a group of private sector comp…
