AUSTRALIA : Mango growers urged to hire prisoners for harvest

Justice Minister John Elferink is urging farmers to consider hiring Northern Territory prisoners before using foreign workers to harvest crops.








East Timor has called on Australia to introduce a seasonal workers scheme so its citizens can work at Top End farms during harvest time.








Territory mango growers have previously complained about the lack of workers available to local farms.





Mr Elferink says foreign workers should only be used as a last resort.






"I have a work in prison program called 'Sentenced to a Job', which I would like to see advanced, and I wouldn't appreciate competition in that space," he said.
