A Tree In India Is Bigger Than The Average Wal-Mart

MEGAN WILLETT

It may sound hard to believe, but the world's widest tree, located near Kolkata, India, is bigger than the average Wal-Mart.

The gigantic Banyan tree may look like a forest from far away, but it's actually comprised of a myriad of aerial roots that cover 3.5 square acres of land, which equals roughly 156,000 square feet, or 14,400 square meters.

Compare that to data from the most recent unit count and square footage report from Wal-Mart, which says that the average store size (that's not a Supercenter) is just under 105,000 square feet or 9,750 square meters.

The Great Banyan Tree’s canopy is made up of 3,511 aerial prop roots that connect to the earth, which make them look like individual trees, according to the Times of India.

The tree made it into "The Guinness Book of World Records” as the world's widest tree, and has even been featured on stamps in India.

LA RUTA DEL VINO PREPARES FOR VINDIMIA 2014 (August 01-17, 2014)

Published on Feb 7, 2014

Primus Linked Again to a Great Audit and a Foodborne Illness Outbreak

POSTED BY BILL MARLER ON JULY 23, 2014

A few evenings ago I posted the final CDPH Report on the E. coli outbreak linked to Trader Joe’s and Walgreen’s

Primus finds itselfredacted on page 14 of the report:

Ratto Bros. also underwent routine audits from a third party, _____.

The most recent _____ audit before the implicated romaine harvest was on August 8, 2013 (Exhibit B). The audit was performed on Ranch 6, 9, and 10 and the audit evaluated two areas, food safety management system requirements and good agricultural practices requirements.

The firm had received a total score (before corrections) of 95.91% out of a possible 100%. The area where Ratto Bros. lost points in the audit was in good agricultural practices. They were marked down because there was animal activity (birds) on Ranch 6 during the audit, there were three dogs observed on land adjacent to Ranch 6, a water source was accessible to animals, and a water source was not free from a contamination issue (vegetation). The full version of Arnold Schwarzenegger's now legendary "Life's 6 Rules" speech, originally used during the Governor's 2009 USC Commencement Address.

The 'governator' discusses with graduates his 'golden rules' to leading a successful life and career. These rules can be applied to anything in life, including bodybuilding itself, and show the drive behind a man who has accomplished each and every task he set out to achieve when he burst onto the bodybuilding scene over 40 years ago.

A little known fact, bodybuilding trainer Joe Weider revealed that Arnold informed him he wanted to succeed in bodybuilding, acting and politics when he first arrived at Weider's training gym at the start of his career. Since then, he's seen him go onto achieve each goal systematically and without failure.

Brazil to Africa underwater Drug Route : Op Illustrates Scope of Independent Cocaine Networks

A police diagram of the group's submarine plans

An operation to catch the leader of a Brazilian network that smuggled cocaine into more than 30 countries serves as an example of the powerful independent traffickers operating in Brazil, though the drug boss remains at large.

After a two-and-a-half year investigation into the group, Brazilian authorities carried out Operation Deep Water (Operação Aguas Profundas) in seven Brazilian states on May 23. Five suspects were arrested, but leader Mario Sergio Machado Nunes managed to escape, and Brazilian authorities and Interpol continue to search for him, reported InfoSur Hoy

According to Brazilian police, Machado's group purchased cocaine in Peru, Bolivia, Colombia and Paraguay and trafficked the drug to destinations including the United States, Spain, the United Arab Emirates and Angola. Bruno Pereira Pinto Gama, the head of Brazil's drug agency (DRE), estimated that the organization&#…

China’s terrifying debt ratios poised to breeze past US levels

By Ambrose Evans-PritchardEconomics

Last updated: July 22nd, 2014

The China-US sorpasso is looming. I do not mean the much-exaggerated moment when China’s GDP will overtake America's GDP – which may not happen in the lifetime of anybody reading this blog post – as China slows to more pedestrian growth rates (an objective of premier Li Keqiang.)

The sorpasso may instead be the ominous moment when China’s debt ratios overtake the arch-debtor itself.

I had presumed that this inflection point was still a very long way off, but a new report from Stephen Green at Standard Chartered argues that China’s aggregate debt level has reached 251 per cent of GDP, as of June.

This is up 20 percentage points of GDP since late 2013. The total is much higher than normal estimates, though it tallies with what I have heard privately from officials at the IMF and the BIS.

Mr Green – a highly-respected China veteran – includes total social financing (TSF), offshore cross-border bank borrowing (a story that w…

"El Chapo" Guzman after his February arrest

Captured Sinaloa Cartel leader "El Chapo" Guzman has reportedly banded together with rival "La Barbie" to organize a hunger strike from his isolation cell, suggesting the kingpin does not enjoy the run of the prison granted him by corrupt authorities during his last stint behind bars.

According to a Proceso report by journalist Anabel Hernandez -- author of bestselling book "Los Señores del Narco" -- Joaquin Guzman Loera, alias "El Chapo," has organized nearly 1,000 prisoners from five wings of the Altiplano maximum security prison in Mexico State to stop eating in protest of alleged violations of their human rights.

To coordinate the strike he sought out the help of former Beltran Leyva Organization (BLO) leader Edgar Valdez Villareal, alias "La Barbie," who is also locked up in solitary confinement, according to Hernandez.

Border patrol: 'This is the dream of every terrorist in the world'

TODD'S AMERICAN DISPATCH

The Transportation Security Administration is strongly denying accusations that it has been allowing illegal immigrants to board American jetliners without proper identification.

The National Border Patrol Council, a union representing thousands of Border Patrol agents, accused the TSA of letting illegals board airplanes with a “Notice to Appear” document instead of a passport or official government identification card.

Union leaders said illegals were allowed to board jetliners without proper identification at airports in El Paso and Laredo, Texas. The story was first reported by Breitbart News.

“This is the dream of every terrorist in the world,”
Shawn Moran, vice president of the union, told me.

“There is no way of knowing who is on board the jetliners.”

Whenever illegal immigrants are processed, Moran said, they are released with a “Notice to Appear” document.

He said that’s the document they are using to fly…

Even WSJ agrees: GMOs threaten food security while offering no solution for India's poor

(NaturalNews) The government of India appears to be slowly falling into the clutches of multinational chemical companies craftily pushing their own patented genetically modified (GM) crops as the solution to hunger and poverty, with a new bill set to deliver subsidized food made from these poisons to more than 800 million Indian people.

But one prominent organizer with extensive knowledge in Indian farming issues says the answer is not GM crops but rather agro-ecological approaches that rely on organic, chemical-free growing methods.

Dilnavaz Variava, who heads the consumer issues division of the Alliance for Sustainable and Holistic Agriculture, says more than 1 million Indian farmers from roughly 10,000 villages throughout the country are already growing pesticide-free crops on more than 3.5 million acres with great success -- apart from GMOs.

This is the agriculture model with the g…

NEW BOARD MEMBER DEFIES THE "STATUS QUO" AT THE NATIONAL MANGO BOARD (NMB)

Pine Island resident named to National Mango Board

July 23, 2014

Fort Myers Beach Bulletin, Fort Myers Beach Observer

This past November, the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture appointed Jean Sapp, co-owner (with her husband, Chris) of Promised Land Mangoes in Pineland, Pine Island, to the board of directors of the National Mango Board.

The purpose of the National Mango Board is to increase the consumption of mangoes in the U.S. through marketing, research and industry relations programs. Overseen by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, it is made up mostly of Central and South Americans, who are the largest producers and distributors of mangoes worldwide. Jean is only the second domestic (U.S.) mango grower, and the first female grower, named to that board from the domestic side.

Jean and Chris purchased their 40-acre Pineland grove in 1980. Planted in 1950, the trees produce 19 varieties of mangoes, but primarily the Haden Smith mango.

Jean describes the Smith as "an excellent mango. It h…
