Anaheim, Calif.-based Northgate Gonzalez Markets had more than Mango Mania in a record-setting display built in late July.

Alfonso Cano, produce director, said Northgate Gonzalez decided to coordinate two events around its entry for the National Mango Board’s Mango Mania display contest.

“First was to build the largest fruit display ever,”he said.

“We even entered the display to the folks at Guinness.”

On July 21, Cano said a “Loco Por Mango” display was built at the company’s Long Beach, Calif., store that was 17 pallets long, 2 pallets wide and about 80,000 pounds of large, extra large and yellow mangos.

This qualifies as the largest fruit display at retail, Cano said, and was submitted to the Guinness Book of World Records for certification.

As the massive display sold down, Northgate Gonzalez converted it into the second phase, the Northgate Gonzalez Soccer Stadium and “Copa Mango.”

Consumers of organic foods are getting both more and less than they bargained for. On both counts, it’s not good.

Many people who pay the huge premium—often more than a hundred percent–for organic foods do so because they’re afraid of pesticides. If that’s their rationale, they misunderstand the nuances of organic agriculture.

Although it’s true that synthetic chemical pesticides are generally prohibited, there is a lengthy list of exceptions listed in the Organic Foods Production Act, while most “natural” ones are permitted.

However, “organic” pesticides can be toxic. As evolutionary biologist Christie Wilcox explained in a 2012 Scientific American article
(“Are lower pesticide residues a good reason to buy organic? Probably not.”): “Organic pesticides pose the same health risks as non-organic one…

BARTELMO CELLOS NOW PRODUCED IN BAJA CALIFORNIA

Dennis Bartelmo, born into a humble, middle-class Italian-Irish family, is the youngest of eleven children.

Immersed into the world of Italian cooking at a young age by his father, Vincent, he grew passionate about flavor.

By observing his father, he was able to learn the proper way to combine ingredients to create palate-pleasing foods and drinks.

Now, using the technique taught to him by his father, he wants to share the exquisite Bartelmo family limoncello and Orangecello with the world.

Not only does this process allow the limoncello and Orangecello to reach its full potential in color and flavor, but it also allows the drink to work as an excellent palate cleanser.
