INDIA 2016 : Timely rains improve Totapuri mango prospects

Reasonably heavy rain has fallen for the past two days, which was excellent for the Indian Totapuri fruit size and yield of purée, according to a report sent to Foodnews.

The Totapuri harvest will begin in earnest during the next two weeks and should last until the mid/end of July. The rain means that the harvest should have a normal yield.

Why are carcinogens in the food chain evading scrutiny?

 Vegetable oil, processed food, infant formula and cancer: All the ingredients for a consumer food scare over the carcinogenic contaminant 3­MCPD are there ­ so why hasn't there been one yet? 



This month's opinion from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) concluded there is sufficient evidence that glycidyl fatty acid esters – contaminants formed during the processing of refined vegetable oils – are genotoxic and carcinogenic. 



Babies are exposed to up to ten times the acceptable levels through infant formula and although levels in palm oils and fats have halved in the past 6 years due to voluntary measures taken by producers, palm oil is the biggest contributor for most individuals. But the news seemed to pass relatively quietly with little mention in mainstream media.

US organic food & beverage sales rose 10.6% to $39.8bn in 2015, says OTA

Sales of organic food and drink surged 10.6% to $39.8bn in 2015, significantly ahead of the 3% growth in the overall food market, with some segments up more than 30% year­on­year, according to the Organic Trade Association (OTA). 



Total organic product sales (which includes non­food items) rose 11% to $43.3 billion, said the OTA. 



The biggest category within organic food is fruits and veggies (sales +10.6% to $14.4bn), with almost 13% of the produce sold in the US now organic; followed by dairy (sales +10% to $6bn). 



Sales of organic fresh juices and drinks surged 33.5% in 2015, making it the fastest­growing organic subcategory, closely followed by eggs (+32%), and organic condiments (+18.5%). Sales of organic snack foods, meanwhile, rose almost 14% to $2.3bn.
